So my gelding is going to be 2 on Friday and I'm starting to think what have i bought! not that I will ever get rid of him but..................

he got an abscess in his foot at easter and after poulticing he went sound again then on sunday he went lame again, so i assumed where its been wet hes got some dirt in the hole and its got infected, so I got my farrier friend out yesterday and he couldnt find any problems in his feet.

He's not let learnt the art of trot in hand so I couldnt get him to trot up so my friend could see how lame he was :( - he has a couple of scraps on his leg, so wonder if hes maybe been kicked or something in the field!

but also while my friend was looking at his feet he said "oh hes got a sarcoid" SO not knowning much about them, I have looked into it and it doesn't sound good, I have just been looking at him and he has 2 lumps on the side of his chest, which I had assumed were just scabs until now, as he's forever cutting himself! but think the farrier is right :(

and silly me got insurance and thought, what could go wrong with a 2 yr old so didnt get any vet fees covered on it! just got a basic policy!
 
I don't think they would cover sarcoids anyway would they?

I only bought him 2 months ago, would I have any leg to stand on if I confronted the people I bought him from? surely they should have told me that he had them?
 
You bought a horse not a handbag, buy some Camrosa if you don't want to bother the vet,

Oh and learn to love and appreciate your horse, one day that 2 year old will make you very happy if you put the time effort and love in.
 
I love this horse so much and despite all this I wouldn't consider getting rid of him! I just don't know much about sarcoids, is it always as bad as turning into skin cancer? will my insurance cover it? I just want someone to make me feel better about it :'(
 
No, it's not always a worse case scenario, there are different types of sarcoids, many horses have them with no ill effects at all, you have'nt contacted a vet about them yet, so you can amend your insurance, but you will have a time exclusion on it before you can claim anything for vet fees, sarcoids don't have to mean the worse !
 
Not sure how long you've had him but most insurance companies will ask for a vetting if you decide to add vet's fees cover to a horse you've had for a while. Prob not what you want to hear but its designed to stop people only insuring their horse when they think something is wrong.
 
I wouldnt worry too much about it. I once bought a Connemara with a huugeeee Sarcoid (it was bigger than a gold ball, hanging from her stomach and seeping) three trips from the vet and keeping it clean and it didnt return in the 5 1/2 years that i had her!!!

I think sometimes as horse owners we panic too much over the slightest thing, especially when reading on here.

I know i'm guilty of it, find something on my horse, research it, then think "arrghh ring the vet" just for the vet to say hes fine!!! lol
 
Oh cool thanks guys, that's made me feel so much better! I only bought him 2 months ago, so he clearly had them when I got him! I didn't get vet fees added at the beginning as it was about 400 and I just assumed as I've been lucky with my mare I'd be luck still! Silly of me I know! My farrier did say they were nothing to worry about, just to keep an eye on them, but googling it always makes it seem worse!
 
Just a suggestion but as he's only 2 try petplan, i've got my 2 year old insured with them, its only £13 per month and thats with up to £5000 vets fees, and thank goodness i've got that as she is currently in horsepital since last thursday and will be there until at least this thursday, so you just never know what/when anything will happen, they are horses after all !!! good luck with your baby.
 
My boy had a sarcoid, had it removed because it was near his girth area, but that was the only reason, it was a nodular one so wasn't open and seeping, so if it hadn't been where it was, it wouldn't had worried me. Yes it was covered on my insurance, but sarcoids are now excluded because he's had it treated. It doesn't worry me if it does reappear, it wasn't that costly to remove so I would just deal with it. If the sarcoids aren't bothering him and they aren't nasty and open I wouldn't be worrying, just enjoy him and try not to dwell on the problems, like someone has already said, you bought a horse not a handbag so there are bound to be the odd hiccup.
