is it arrogant to think you have 'outgrown' a trainer?

OK I am having trainer trouble and I thought maybe you guys might be able to help

I will try and explain! I've always had lessons with a qualified instructor (a very good one) ever since i started riding. Which was great - I learnt to ride!

then after school etc. i decided i wanted to showjump so went to a few pro yards to get a bit more specialised training and its changed how i ride a bit, changed how i want to produce and ride mine.

now back home, back to my old instructor. but its wierd. we have different ideas, and i guess slightly different aims in what i want out of a horse, and what i perceive as issues i want to solve are different to what they see.
but i by no means know all i need to and i still need help - i feel a bit of a idiot pushing help away from someone who knows more than i do, but its just not working for me

maybe its that a qualified instructor just isnt the same as a pro rider's input?

have you guys had any experience of this kind of confusion/conflicting advice before? how did you sort it?

Nope, I have outgrown 2 and now on another. The people I was having lesson with were fab until I reached a point, now I have a trainer with more experience at a higher level. Best thing I ever did.

I think you need a different trainer if you feel like this, some instructors are just in an "instruction" mindset, others think of themselves as coaches.

I believe that the BHS register of instructors includes details of accrediations to BE/BD/BS so look for an instructor with a coaching accreditation to whatever discipline you want to specialise in. One of my old instructors was also a BD approved coach and she was fab, not the sort to bark orders more to work through solutions with you. She actually used to say, you don't need and instructor, I'm not here to tell you what to do.

I have outgrown quite a few

But the one I have now is FANTASTIC and won't be outgrowing her in a long time!

I think it's quite natural to outgrow trainers tbh. So if you are feeling like this then maybe a new one is needed.

I think it's a natural progression. Sometimes it's not even 'outgrowing' as such it's just that ideas change, even slightly, and somehow it just doesn't 'click' anymore.

I learnt a lot from very experienced local instructors, however there were pieces that I just couldn't reconcile in my head, I just didn't know any different and believed that it must be what everyone did.

Years down the line, I've met a few new people, who's ideas have completely changed my outlook- I learnt a lot from my original instructors, but the only way I'll move now is forward!

i agree with above comments...as you evolve as a rider, you do tend to 'outgrow' certian trainers.

i had a sj trainer for a while, but soon 'outgrew' him as my aims changed and i got a different horse...so i got a new trainer.

both were fab, in different ways, so i dont think it is arrogant of you atall - just normal

its not so much that you 'outgrow' them but that your needs change. in the same way that sometimes you sell a horse because your needs/wants change. i've had lots of trainers- have learnt something from them all but have moved around to two people who consistently teach me something everytime i get on. the day that stops happening then i will look for someone else

i think its hard because you can feel guilty but its perfectly normal
