Is it better to breed or to buy a foal?

If you know exactly what you are looking for then it is probably much easier to go and buy one. There is no guarantees with breeding your own - what with the chance of loosing one or both. Cant say its much cheaper breeding your own than buying one - it depends on what youre looking for.

Well our lovely foals can go at weaning from £1350, so I reckon it's better to buy..(but then I would wouldn't I?

i think buying and breeding your own foal are amazing experiences. i bought a sports horse foal and got him at weaning and he is amazing, im so glad ive got him. also at the moment my mare has gone to stud, and im so excited about her hopefully having a foal next year. i personally think buying and breeding a foal are both great. however i love my mare so much and really want a minnie lizzie, so breedig your own foal will be amazing and what ever colour, sex or height it will be you will love it.

I feel the same about my horse and would love a mini-Rose. Having said that things are not going smoothly at stud and she has been there for 7 weeks and is only just coming into season with the added complication of fluid.
I am going to need to make a decision soon about bringing her home and I will have wasted all that time with her away and have the guilt about unsettling her.
I would say go for the breeding but make sure you have all the pre-breeding checks done before sending her away, or even have AI done at home.

I'm scaremcclare's mum...the one with the cheque book enabling her to buy her baby sports horse (Archie) and breed from her beloved Lizzie (Scare McClare.....who's wonderful daughter, Scare Lotte, is this season's East Anglian champion point-to-point mare -WOW - so proud, even though we didn't breed her!!). Yes, I admit, I'm looking forward to Lizzie's (Scare McClare's) return from stud - miss her so much! - and whatever she produces (she's being covered by Primitive Proposal - her previous "husband" was Primitive Rising), we're going to love it like mad and keep it for ever (but, please God, can we PLEASE PLEASE have a chestnut filly, preferably with a blaze and four while socks.....please!!!)! I can honestly say that breeding a foal is a real BUZZ! Can't wait for that phone call from the stud to say that she's been scanned in foal and we can bring her home! I could quite easily get carried away by this breeding lark, and, yes, I still love young Archie dearly, even though we bought him at weaning, but looking through Horse Deals or whatever just isn't the same as the excitement attached to a fantastic mare producing a, hopefully, fantastic foal!
