I'm new to hunting:) and dont like to ask other members but can someone point me in the right direction? Is it correct to say good Night or Good evening when leaving to go home? And could someone suggest a good basic book about hunt terms please. All I know yet ,is to say GoodMorning to the Master and that hounds have sterns not tails. :eek:Help please.

Yes it is, even if you are going home at 9:00am after a mornings cubbing !

A few other things are:

After saying good morning to the Master and hunt staff, find the secretary and pay your cap.
Always keep horses head to hounds when hounds are passing.
Don't overtake the Field Master
Keep to the headlands if fields are sown and don't go over crops
If there is a gate open next to a jump, then use the gate.
If someone says gates please, then pass it on those behind, - if noone behind then close it.
If someone opens a gate for you then thank them.
If your horse has never been before then put green tape/ribbon in his tail.
Speak to the secretary before hunting and ask what would be a suitable day for a newbie, they may well suggest someone to nanny you.

I'm sure there are plenty of people on here who can add to this list of things that are good etiquette. Basically good manners and common sense cover most things.

Enjoy your hunting !

another one is when jumping if the person in front shouts wire or anything like that always pass (shout) the message to the person behind you.

lizzie has covered a lot of it i also try and avoid jumped fences if a rider infront has broken it particularly timber which then have upright stakes ive seen jumps like that go wrong and also you cant see how far out the rail has been knocked
ware means beware again always pass it back so ware hole ware wire ware root etc
always thank footfollowers that open gates as the scruffy man in a flat cap could quite posisbly be the landowner
always be aware of livestock in fields and listen out for shouts of loose animals or horses
if you see someone have a fall and their horse is running across the fence line for gods sake dont try and jump ive seen this happen and another three people end up on the floor let the horse run the fence line clear even better catch it if you can

And IF your horse has no brakes, please do NOT pick a big 17hh Irish Draught with a big a*se to run him into! This happened to poor Rambo at least 4 times last week - only his second day hunting - and only 6 months since he was gelded. Bless him, he didn't kick them into the middle of next week - but he wasn't amused!

correct is to say Good Night when you leave, whatever the time of day.

not sure about a book - but you could try the pony club manual? or they used to do a pamphlet about hunting... otherwise - try the sticky at the top of this forum!
