I have just been browsing at horse/pony ads, to find alot more bayroans than usual. I think i have seen 10 these past few days. Well i have been seeing alot of other roan colours to.

Are Roans coming back into fashion?

They can be entered in 'coloured' classes at most shows now.

She's 6 and isn't MAJORLY roany, but you can see it quite well and she's allowed to enter odd-coloured/coloured classes at shows, but each time she gets a new coat, either summer or winter she gets more white hairs.

Yes, roan s of all sorts were unpopular for years, butthey are enjoying a revival. Roan is a very old fasioned colour for a horse. My grandfather always commented on the lack of them in the 70's.

Guess it was snobbery as people thought a true couloured horse more classy and neater looking. Coloureds were out of fashion too.

So, yes, you do see more these days... except for Dales ponies. I think the last roan Dales Stallion died a couple of years ago. I have his son, but he's gelded... so there won't be any more roan Dales as black is dominant and prefered.

Nope, you're wrong there I'm afraid Yorkshire Lass!

We [Nipna Dales stud] have a bay roan, Coverdales Carnival Queen - she is by Wharfdale Prince Regent (roan) and I forget who her mother is.

Who is your roan Dales? PM me if you prefer

This is Cherry -

There is the Roandales pony stud, who are actively breeding Roan ponies - the foal on the left is a Roandale foal, although she is not roan herself and will not produce roan ponies. The foal in the middle is out of Cherry - we got Cherry unseen and the foal popped out a few weeks later! The foal is not pure Dales bred.

We hope to breed Cherry to our Dales stallion - fingers crossed we'll get another roan!

Is Regent still alive? Pat Whelan who bred my Dales, Keysbeck Digitalis (Full brother of Dandilion, also by Regent) said Regent was dead and that was it for the roan stallions. He is out of Pat's mare Dolly. You will know Pat if you have been to the breed show, she is the lady on the gate.

Pat said no one was bothering with roan Dales because theyare worth less as everyone wants a black one!

I bought Digit simply because my father is nostalgic for roans.

Just to let you know, there are still roan Dales ponies being bred, as well as roan mares, we also have a blue roan homebred stallion Roandale Bobby, there are only two bloodlines in the Dales that carry the roan gene, we have ponies from both, so though still rare, they are still being bred! as for them being quote 'worthless' i strongly disagree, we have had a lot of interest in them from home and abroad, the roan colour has been in the dales breed since records began, it was in the fell breed too but died out many years ago, as a recognized colour we strive to keep it going, as they are such a rarity they are much admired.

Should have added that yes we put down Wharfedale Prince Regent in 2004 aged 24 yrs he was a lovely stallion a real gentleman, we have geldings and mares by him some roan some not, as stated earlier our other roans are from the other roan line which includes our roan stallion, we are happy to answer any questions anyone may have about the roan dales, regards gina & charlie parker the Roandale Stud
