Oh dear, I think I'm going through one of those phases....do I need help, am I going mad?

I just want to buy buy buy....anything for my horse, supplements, treats, food, tack, rugs...

All I think about is what can I buy for him next, I bought him a new headcoller and lead rope last week, its still in the bag! but yesterday I went an bought another...but in a different colour, I even just buy bags of haylage for him just for him to snack on while I groom him and end up wasting half of the bale because it goes off faster than we can use it....but i still have to buy him it just cos he likes it. I'm just been on the net now looking at R&R and Robinsons...looking at everything, making a list of what we need...I a a mean want...or it is need?

I need everything to match, want everything new, I even dreamt last night about being in tack shop and buying him 4 new saddle cloths in funky colours....think I'm going mad but that was more exciting that...I duno dreaming about Brad Pit for example...ok that was huge fat lie but you get my drift!

I nearly had a panic attack the other day because he'd run out of his favourite Bananna and Dragonfruit Horse Treats....I had to ring the shop and ask for them to stay open till after 5pm for 10 minutes so I could call round on my way from work to get them! just wouldn't feel right calling at the garage for some polo's lol!

Not only that but I cant live with myself if I've not groomed him for longer than one day, he's got to groomed by religion, brought in for his munchies and a fuss otherwise I wouldn't be able to sleep at night despite being checked on every day or ridden in the week. I even have to wash his tail every week, cos I cant stand to see is get dusty or dirty!...in fact that's job for tonight!

Sometimes I can be grooming and faffing for an hour...and my OH says ''you been getting it ready all this time!, why are you always twice as long as everyone else that goes down to that yard to ride!'' ....and ''that horse gets more attention than me'!'....come we've all hear that line before surely?

Think I'm loosing the plot, is anyone else obsessed and needs to spoil their horse....do I need help? my RI says I'm crackers and over fuss him too much.

Now everytime my horse see's a person he just stops and expects a big fuss and treats (which is not good...and yes is my fault) he looks heartbroken if I'm riding him out and a passer by is walking a dog of something and just walks straight past and ignores him as he stops to say hello!

He's used to be a right grumpy man when I got him, everyone the yard thought he was evil (even had a warning sign on his stable door) and they even thought he was rig and some wouldnt dare walk by him, now he loves everyone and is so nosey, even my OH said last night, he a real character and he's non horsey OH.

I feel guilty leading him back to his field...makes it worse when he stops all the time when taking him back...can you over humanize a horse?

Agree - Rideaway and Robinsons catalogues in our house are well-thumbed bibles.

Hubby bought his first horse this year - she has about rugs which have not even been taking out of the bag, and they all have matchiing lead-ropes and headcollars...if we can't think of anything to do, we have been known to bundle kids in car and do a tour of local tack shops buying stuff we don't even need - I have been known to match sadddle cloth to T-shirts, (at one point I became obsessed by Joules polo shirts) and I recently replaced all my perfectly good black tack with brown leather, because on a whim I bought a brown leather saddle for showing ( been to one show this year, so you can tell how urgent the need was, but I became obsessive about tracking down and buying a brown straight-cut leather saddle- I could not live without one!!!!)

Madness indeed.....

[/ QUOTE ] YES!!! My horses should feel lucky if they get so much as abit of fly spray when the flies are bad. There lovely characters but they are horses at the end or the day! I can't say it bothers me when I put Rambos grazing muzzle on, and then feed Spider leaving both Rambo and Jesse watching (neither of them need feed and I know Spider will kick them if they tried to get his) Mean mummy

I don't feed treats, in fact a year ago a friend bought me a tub of herbel treats(?) a year later theres only maybe a small indent and only used for getting the horses on message therpy to strech. She also bought Jesse a lickit which I quickly ate myself

Very yummy

Gromm horses daily - Pah! Got each other for that, they only roll!

Would you like to adopt me?
It's your horse do want you want with it...as long as you aren't creating problems (getting nippy cause of hand feeding etc) and you are both happy and healthy stick to your guns - no one else' opinion matters. Does sound like you might be in danger of bankrupting yourself though!
I do think you can make a horse rude and disrespectful by being over familiar with it - for example I never let my horse rub on me because 1) it hurts and 2) I think it sets a bad tone for your relationship you need to have the upper hand and be in charge.a A horse wouldn't rub on the dominant animal in the field because it'd get kicked.
If you don't have any problems and the horse is behaving as you want it to don't worry but I wouldn't feel guilty for being less lavish with him either. As long as they are having their basic needs met (feed, water, turn out, company etc) with some job of work and are free from pain horses are quite happy.

Well, my horse was a wreck when I got him and I admit i do pamper him....but hes deffo a human in a horses body, he's a bit of a Quentin Crisp- he would be wearing a smoking jacket if they made them in his size, and thats a fact.

Thought I'd just add I think I've had my new horse for six weeks now, I've bought him two things, a polypad and a breastplate. He's tack etc is all bits and pieces from old horses, but it does it's job. *Feels saint like...*

Im constantly looking for new things to buy for my horse. . .

My parents said that the last thing i could have was my eventing boots which came today

Phew *wipes forehead* glad I'm not the only one, but no I don't let him get away with anything, he knows I'm boss hog now, think he's realised its an easier life that way (bit like the OH) except I don't spoil him!

substitute baby syndrome I think they call it

99.9% of what I spend on mine are real ESSENTIALS. They don't get expensive rugs (they would only get nicked) and I don't care if their leadrope and headcollar don't match. They do get what is essential, farrier/vet/edt/fitting tack.
I'm such a meany mummy

I once got to the stage when I could look through a catalogue and say to myself "I really DON"T need anything else" then I moved and gave/sold/chucked 20 years worth of assorted horse necessities all away.

Now for six horses, I have a dozen assorted halters, three bridles, a show halter, three saddles, a driving harness, six turnouts, two cotton sheets, a lunge line and that is it, and I honestly haven't needed anything else for the last two years.

It has been quite a revelation

I can even walk into the tack store without being pulled toward the blanket displays. I do have a rather sad fascination for sparkly show halters but can't justify spending $500 on another one.
