I had a letter last week saying that they are going to change the way that they exclude conditions - instead of specifically noting exclusions they will just exclude every illness encountered upt the date of the last renewel. Someone at the yard hasn't had one yet so I wondered if anyone else had?

I am a bit concerned that now I don't really know what he is excluded for - he had a problem on one leg - now I'm not sure if he is excluded for all legs or just that one - same problem with diorhear (sp!) and colic he had this winter - is he excluded for both or just colic

I am going to ring up pet plan, which is a shame as I have been happy with NFU

I've had one, but I assumed that it related to the claim that I've had with them since last June and they were pre-warning me as my renewal is due end July. I found the letter a bit complicated but took it to read that they wouldn't pay for anything new that could be directly related to the condition that I claimed for - must go and re-read it!!

I think you should call them to clarify what the letter is stateing before you do anything! TBH, NFU is a good insurance company and they should explain what is in the letter,I'm with KBIS and if I received this kind of letter I would do just that, and you will find they would be expecting calls!

Might be because your renewal is due soon??? I have had a letter and mine is due next month...... I have also hit them with a hefty 3k bill so far for merlins leg, and the vet seems keen to use up the rest..... starting with re-xraying the joint tomorrow, followed by more irap, tildren and shockwave therapy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I would exclude myself too!! I rang them and they said he would be excluded now for the fetlock joint and anything else it may cause in the future!!

I think they are covering themselves for any possible future claims..... you know what they say about insurance companies????

"They give you an umbrella...............then want it back when it starts raining"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Right - I will definatly give them a ring tommorow - my insurance is due for renewel this month and I have recently said I would like to claim - so maybe I have got hold of the wrong end of the stick

Just thought I'd add Petplan exclude previous injuries as well and anything directly arising from that condition. My last horse had 3 exclusions on it by time she was PTS,daughters pony has 2 exclusion from last 3 yrs even tho she's fine now
I thought all insurances did that!Dam missed out on that all these years!

NFU do exclude things but they are specific - e.g. my boy is excluded from dental related problems - I have just read this new letter as meaning that they aren't going to specifically exclude things - i.e. if they have had a condition, consider it excluded. I don't really have a problem with this except that unless the condition is very clearly cut it would be hard to know the extent of the exclusion.

Re reading the letter, it seems to me that they are trying to cover themselves, and avoid paying out on anything that has happened before the renewal date..

It says,

From your next renewal date, we will be applying specific exclusions which replaces the general exclusion relating to previous problems your horse may have suffered.

This will make it clear that the insured horse will not be covered for:

Any claim which directly or indirectly arises from, or is connected with:

Any accident which happened before the start of the policy, or if this has been in place for a year or more, before the last renewal.

Any ilness, disease or condition which first appeared, before the start of the policy or, if this has been in force for a year or more, before the last renewal.

Any legal liability or damage which happens before the start of the policy.

It also states on mine that:

Due to the cost of claims, we have increased the premium on the vets fees section, This can be reviewed after 2 years without claims. (Oh joy, more expensive)

Not sure if this helps anyone who hasnt had the letter, but it just confuses me. I read it as , 'If it happened before the start of the renewal date, your buggered!! Rather than if it starts before the policy is taken out, your buggered'!!! which is what it used to be!!

So not really much use??? What if the horse injures itself the week of renewal??? Perhaps this sentence helps,

"If treatment is ongoing at renewal of your policy, we will continue to pay up to the limits of cover shown in your policy"

So do they now not stop paying when the year is up?????.

I haven't had one, but haven't had to claim anything yet (touch wood). Did get a letter offering me an extra £10 off a car insurance quote as apparently they had got my name wrong in a previous correspondance.

Don't remember then doing that, but don't mind having an extra tenner off if their quoteis any good.

I think they do! I started my claim last May and early April this year, they sent me a letter reminding me when the year ended. As by that point I knew I'd spent all my "allowance", it didn't really matter! I've also had the bit in my letter about increasing the vets fees - tbh I expected that and/or the excess to be higher this year because of the claim. Just waiting for the renewal to land with a hefty thump through the letterbox!!

Yup. Standard. I had one in January when my policy was renewed.

When I had to claim again for Patches this year, the woman on the claims line had no idea what I'd claimed for in the past. She just told me that the underwriters will check into what I'd specifically claimed for to make sure I wasn't trying to claim for the same illness twice. Thought that was a bit strange as they always used to know what injuries/conditions I'd claimed for in the past.

That sort of letter is standard for any insurance company to issue, I'm not sure I see the problem?
Probably worth calling them and asking them to explain it to you if you are confused.

Hi ya.
I've had the same letter to! My renewal is due this month, because we made a claim this year on one of his tendon's. Gotta be honest and confess that I've not read the letter thoroughly, I just thought it was standard practice to exclude that leg from all future treatments! Perhaps I had better go home tonight and read it.... oops!

Must admit have never had a problem with any of my claims from petplan and 2 horse were for full whack vet fees and a loss of use which they paid out for prior to horse getting freezemarked as we are in NE Scotland and couldn't get branding done for at least another 3/4 months.Maybe just lucky
Will say NFU def go up in my book cos they paid out difference from grass livery to stabled for a pony that broke a pedal bone!Had never heard of that been done before.

I was with E & L when my horse got kicked on the leg she had to got to Ashbrook equine hospital at Knutsford for an op, it turned out that the small wound 1 inch long was a chip to the sesamoid bone, snapped annular ligament and torn tendon sheath. After a two week stay and building my hopes up, my poor Ellie who was only 4 had to be put to sleep. To add insult to injury The Hospital would not deal with E & L ! I had to pay £3600 pounds plus livery. that was Oct 3rd 06. E & l then treated the injury as one claim and another for the death. Threatend with the insurance Ombudsman when I still had not been paid by January ! when they did pay there were 2 lots of exess at 17.5% and other things they wouldnt pay for. DONT every to to E & L
