To take horses and carriages on a dual carriageway?

If it is a dual carriageway where you can ride your horse, then you should be able to take a carriage on there too. Ridden horses & carriages generally come under exactly the same legislation - eg you can take a carriage down any bridle path as ridden horses are allowed down them. You definitely can't take horses onto motorways at all but unless it specifies you can't ride on a particular dual carriageway then it is legal for you take a carriage on there. Hope that makes sense!

Its a VERY busy dual carriageway at that. So I agree very stupid.

They were travellers. I would be shocked if it were legal.

It is legal if not stupid to take horse and cart onto a dual-carriageway. but it must have a flashing amber beacon to warn drivers of slow moving vehicle to comply.

I saw two lads leading two coloureds from the back a a flat bed truck the other day while a man was driving. Lazy gits, Ponys looked in quite good nick but honestly how stupid! They just had headcollars on there is absolutley no way they could have held on or influenced them had they spooked or pulled away. They had a massive queue of traffic behind them and there was no way they could be safely over taken. People like that give the rest of us a bad name.

The way the price of diesel keeps going up, we will all be using horse and carts for transport.

LOL!!! Very true!

Don't know where you are but there were three of them on the A64 near York this lunchtime which is a very busy dual carriageway. No doubt they are heading for Appleby but they were causing chaos.

Not so. You are not allowed to take a horse and carriage down a Bridlepath.

It is, I believe, legal to drive on a Dual Carriageway, but may not always be sensible.

Unfortunately it is Appleby time of year again. Carriages are allowed on dual carriageways, causes chaos. They do not have to have a flashing amber beacon yet mechanical slow moving vehicles do! It was recommended via certain agencies that carriages use them for their own safety but I suspect many won't.
I think it was the year before last that a boy and a horse were killed when a car hit one on the A66.

This was the A69 between Newcastle and Carlisle. Crazyness, especially with the amount of lorries that use it!
