My mare is TB ex racer - forward going (a little too forward sometimes!) - 18 yrs old - very adventurous on hacks (in a good way), good in traffic, doesn't spook and generally absolutely gorgeous!

I have a youngster who I am focusing all my attention on at the moment and think its time to loan my mare out. She's not up for big X-country days or competing at high levels - she's just happy hacker. We have 1000s of acres here, you never need to go on the roads if you don't want to. Full livery so no mucknig out.

How much do you reckon is a good price to loan her out? id loaning the right word or is it sharing or 'to ride'

She stays at the yard, can ride anytime you like.

I would tend to think that in a loan situation the loanee takes over responsibility for the horse, but can do what they like with it (within what you have agreed, so you can specify that the mare is to stay in current livery yard). So for a loan I would expect the loanee to pay for all expenses.

A sharer would ride in exchange for either a financial contribution or help with the care of the horse (or both!), but I would see the owner as the primary carer and the sharer would come in specific days to do specific tasks.

Other people may mean different things though!

I imagine the amount of money you ask for will depend on how often people can ride her and how much of a contribution you need for her.

If you Loan you generally not only Do everything for the horse but you PAY for everything too !

As yours is on Full livery it would be a very easy loan and you would benifit well on the financial side but you might find it harder to find a loaner if the costs are high. + its coming up to Christmas

She sounds good fun tho so I hope you find someone

I think it will be a sharing situation then as I want to remain in control. So how much guys? I pay £75 per week for her livery. I am not expecting that much as payment from the sharer - maybe half?! They can ride whenever they want.

I think half of the cost would be a very good deal for the sharer, £37.50 is the same as 1 hours lesson in some places!

I think you will need to put everything down in writing & have some kind of contract. Paying half the livery bill is one thing but there are other costs to sort out. Who pays insurance, dental, vets, chiro etc..... all this needs to be thought out. If it isn't you have a recipe for disaster.

I used to pay £110 per calender month for my old share horse, I rode her 4 times a week and on my days I mucked out, fed, bought her in etc.

£37.50 works out to £150/month which sounds a lot IMO for a happy hacker. Ideally you need to include every regular outlay i.e. livery, shoes, feed and then work out a price, but even if you just halved the livery I think it would still be too expensive.

I'd say £100/month would be a fair price.

I agree that's a lot to pay for a happy hacker

I also agree 100 per month sounds fair to me

I don't think I will bother with getting a written agreement in place. Not much point for what I am offering in terms of a share. They turn up, ride, and go home. Payment up front each month or they don't get to ride. If I don't like them I'll send them on their way.

37 quid a week for a share is quite a lot just for hacking - I pay 80 quid a month to ride two amazing horses and am just getting back into the stable duties

Maybe 20 quid a week to ride 3/4 times a week would be sensible
