Is it me or is this an odd way to keep your horse clean?

There's a couple at my yard who have a lovely coloured ISH. They rarely wash it and so he's often quite dirty. The other day they washed him all over with Fairy Liquid, dried him off and then sprayed his back end and legs with Mr Sheen!! She said the silicon in it would help any overnight poo to wipe off more easily before they took him to a comp in the morning. I understand the principal and maybe I just get conned into paying double for a bottle with a picture of a horse on it, but I would prefer to use something which has been proven not to cause an allergic reaction. Thoughts??

I use fairy liquid all the time and I've never had a reaction. If fairy liquid is supposed to be soft and gentle of your hands surely you can use it on a horse!!

Not so sure about the Mr Sheen though.

are you sure that the horse isn't of the wooden variety?

People do do the strangest things, the fairy liquid I can get but the Mr Sheen? I don't get that.

I normaly just use fairy liquid to bath my horse, sometimes use spesific horse shampoo if its to hand but dont use it as a rule. That said i would never used human shampoo on a horse, have seen horses with no tails due to things like that! It dos worry me about using fairy but i havnt had a problem yet and i dont know anyone that has had a problem with fairy. And yes if im going to a show the next day i will use coat shine the night before too to reduce the amount of dirt that sticks to my horse. I thought it was quite common to do this?

ETS- Read it wrong, i woild NEVER use MR sheen on a horse! WTH!

Alot of the horsey mane & tail detanglers and coat shines contain small amounts of silicone (coats the hair), but Mr Sheen is a different matter.

Altho I have heard of pro's using it, it contains a massive amount of silicone and can really damage the hair so I wouldn't even consider using it.

I personally wouldnt use washing up liquid, I find it quite harsh as it strips the natural oils from the coat.

I washed my horses legs in it once and he got mud fever straight after!

I use whatever is cheapest be it washing up liquid or supermarket own brand shampoo or conditioner.I draw the line at mr sheen. It would probably be ok on the lower half of the tail as it is not coming into contact with the skin

Fairy liquid makes my hands feel awful so I always ues gloves and would never use it on my horse.

I use shop's own 'value' baby shampoo on mine - if it's mild enough for babies...

If they put the Mr sheen on the horses back, the saddle will slip. I don't have any problems with the washing up liquid.

I heard that Mr Sheen is carcinogenic ??????

I've heard of a few showing people that do it aswell. Another couple of things are hoovering, and using straightners on the mane before plaiting. I don't do any of these things btw although if my horse would stand still for it i'd be tempted to hoover him! I think he was a chinchilla or something in a previous life, dirt obssessed!

Don't think I'd use furniture polish! There's a variety of not so expensive show sheens and frankly, I used a spray bottle of water on my lad when I was about to go into his class.

I would use Fairy and Mr Sheen on the lower part of the tail as they aren't near the skin. Otherwise, not.

there was a thread earlier in the year about someone using Mr Sheen and a representative of the manufacturers came on the forum. He was very unhappy about any equine use it was being put to and they strongly recommended that it wasn't used for horses. Can't remember why - have a look back in the threads.

I know if I use Fairy Liquid on my hands, it makes them very dry - takes all the natural oils out - TBH I think it's a bit harsh on a horse's coat, particularly one that lives out.

I use mild supermarket own brand shampoo - one for frequent use - admittedly, but at least it is a shampoo, not something designed to take cooking grease off pans!
