Is it normal for a gelding to act this way?

Today at the yard my friend has her gelding tied up in one of the pens. In the pen next to him was a mare in season.
He got all giddy with himself at the mare in season and was let say stiff lol no idea what else to say. So we had to move him as he was trying to rear up in the pen.
Anyway after moving him he put it away but then some stuff come out. I dont know what it was as I was far away but friend said something come out and was horrified as she thought he had ejaculated

, I have never known a gelding to act this way.

Any ideas will be great

Some geldings can get very excited around an in season mare. My own has been quite obvious too in his excitement over one of his female field mates this season. He's been acting quite the boy.

My boy is totally dim with the opposite sex but our friend's 19 year old gelding keeps ALL the ladies in his field happy when the mood is on them. Anyone would think he was entire but he certainly isn't, he's not a rig either but I think he was once used for breeding when he was younger and has never forgotten.

How old is he? At what age was he gelded? Pre-gelding, did he ever cover a mare?

My 19 year old tb acts like a rigg. Gets it out, stiffens it and looks like he could be a stallion but he isnt lol He gets very possessive if one of his 'mares' is taken away. I have no idea why he is like this, maybe he was gelded late, maybe he got the chance to cover a mare. I've never seen anything 'dribble' from his penis though. lol

I must admit that on the last yard, both merlin and his big ginger friend used to get very turned on by a particular mare in the next field!!!

He used to get a bit of a sex wee moment too.... not sure if clear or not but it definately happened....

I used to hide

Marius is definitely a gelding, not a rig, but he mounted a mare once several years ago. She was a very pretty black TB mare as I recall, and we had to separate them pdq. He's been out with mares before and since, but never been quite so much in love, lol. He has, though, been very possessive over certain mares, and herded them away from other geldings etc.
So I would say that some masculine behaviour is quite normal for geldings at times.

Oh I am glad that it is normal, He is just five, and it does say on his passport he had been gelded a couple of years ago.

It was strange as we never had any geldings act like that on our yard, but to be fair the mare was squirting right in his face lol well near enough.

Do you think it could be a problem with him acting this way, in our fields he goes out with mares and geldings but has always been fine.

Maybe its the heat! I arrived up at the yard to find my gelding looking rather tired, as he is ancient I feared the worst until I noticed grippy scuff marks on my mare

I had given him half a bute as well thinking he was in pain! Most ungentlemanly behaviour.

At our yard, we had a mixed field for a couple of years or more with no problems at all. Then one particular new gelding came, and really upset things. He attacked other geldings and became completely obsessed with the mares, one in particular.
So we have had to separate geldings and mares now, and have same sex fields. Even so, when the mares are in season, a couple of the geldings will see off the others along the dividing fence line.
So really, it's not possible to predict what will happen in a mixed herd. As I say, for years we had no problems at all, so maybe you won't either

Thank you for that. We have had mixed herd for a while and never had any problems. Oh actually we had one gelding about 2 years ago that was soo aggresive he picked a horse up by his withers and just charged around the field. It was awful he got banned as it was like that if it went out with just mares or just geldings.

Mad though as you would not have thought that horse would be like that, the most laid back horse you know. People didnt believe me and friend when we said it was stampeding at us as the horse is really that laid back, untill one day a lot were getting horses in and he was really bad. I am so glad got it sooner than later as could have been an accident.
