Is it okay to rug a horse up straight after excersize?

I stick a fleece on my mare and leave her stabled for around an hour to cool down/dry off or if it's cold I put her halogen heater on in her stable and leave her rugless to dry off.

If I had to turn out immediately I would ensure I did an extended cool down before rugging.

It depends if he's sweating or not and what exercise he's done.

If I've schooled him, he's generally quite hot/sweaty so I put a fleece on for an hour or so (I play it buy ear).

If we've only hacked for 30 mins, his rug goes straight back on! :D x

Your horse won't die if you do it, however, if he/ she is hot and sweaty then there is increased risk of him / her catching a chill and or skin / fungal infections developing... so in other words it isn't ideal.

I prefer to leave for at least half an hour with a fleece on and hay to munch before rugging up and turning out. Just organise my morning's jobs to fill the time :)

It depends what sort of rug and how wet/sweaty your horse is. My mare is a cob so has a fair coat and only her neck is clipped. If she has a really good work out in the manege she gets very sweaty on her belly and between her legs and flanks. I would then use a fleece rug immediately to wick away the sweat - happy to do this immediately.
I would however be loathe to put her into a conventional turnout rug when she was this wet so would either walk her off for a lot longer or put her in a fleece for an hour first. You just don't want them getting chilly which could happen with a waterproof rug holding in the sweat and when it cools they would get cold as the rug would be wet inside. A fleece takes the moisture out and through the rug :)

Hope this helps.

Depends how much work your horse has done, what amount of ridden cool down they have had and how hot they are and what type of rugs you are putting on.

Other than in baking hot weather I would pretty much immediately rug a horse after work, under the theory it's better to keep tired muscles warm - if worked hard and sweaty, they would be washed and thermatex, before night/turnout rugs - if not hot/sweaty then a flick of a brush and straight into day/night rugs as normal.

^^ pretty much this

Thermatex or fleece til dry then normal rugs unless not sweaty then quick brush into normal rugs

Depends on the horse and the rug most modern rugs are breathable so it is ok to rug when damp I would for comfort though either gently sponge off or use a wash for endurance horses before rugging they may be a bit wetter but they are not sticky so more comfortable. Mine live out 24/7 so it impossible to get them dry before rugs are put on we dont have the luxury of lamps and stables.

Both Coolex and fal turn out are designed to wick moisture from the horse. So if horse is just a bit damp after a hack, yes I will put a Coolex turn out on him and turn out. But I always cool down a steaming horse with a fleece prior to rugging.

Coolex also produce a stable rug, but have to say it rubs my horse badly on shoulders, and the neck (stable) attachment is hopeless.
