Is it possible that a vet can upset your horse?

Sounds mad I know but Ru had her stitches out yesterday. It was the end of her box rest and she was a bit full of it but by the time the vet had finished faffing about I had one upset horse on my hands who was then really cranky with the farrier and bad tempered with me. I was so relived to get her out onto field rest she was that cranky.

Is it really possible that he could upset her that much or did she just take an instant dislike to him

Our very neurotic pony hates the vet (she did have a lot of treatment when she fractured a leg so it is understandable I suppose). After any vets visit she is nervy for a day or two, even with us, so I would say yes it definitely happens. My daughter, who is a vet student, is home this weekend and tried to listen to pony's heart. As soon as she approached her with the stethoscope the pony panicked, and this is with someone who has owner her for nearly 10 years!

Yes the vet can upset the horse. I have a large (17.3hh!) Irish horse who will almost cower in the back of his box when he smells the vet! He is the biggest wimp going when the vet comes anywhere near him.

yes my vet only stroked my highly strung mare once and she took an instant dislike and bolted through the stable door breaking my toe in the process, it took days to calm her down (i'mnot joking either, she flipped out everytime someone other than me came on the yard!!)... before he came back to see her again I had to give her sedalin before he arrived just so he could giver her an injection...

My horse loves the vet. This year he had his jabs in the field without a headcollar on.

He has had huge needles stuck into his hocks and tendons and doesnt flinch.

What really gets to him though is the cold gel used for ultrasound, it sends him silly!!

I think it depends on the manner of the vet. She takes no mind of one of the vets, who has a nice quiet manner, but there have been a couple of vets who haven't been nearly so good.

She's sensitive, though, and will handle like a lamb for people who are confident and have good body language but is a nightmare for anyone who is overly forceful, and takes advantage of people who are scared/ don't trust her.

my boy absolutely hates the vets, which doesn't make there job any easier but there isn't anything you can do about it. my girl on the otherhand couldn't care less just stands there for them

My old horse hated the vet and wouldn't let him anywhere near him if there was a hint of a needle about to approach. It was always emotional when he came to visit!

My new horse absolutely loves both the vets and is good as gold for them.

Strange isn't it!!

My vet who is calm and professional has to sedate my mare to examine and re bandage her leg, and still needs 2 of us with her. I can do it on my own with her just tied up.

thank goodness it is not me being odd.
TBH I disliked him intensly.
Since this was all done through the insurance I thought it would be best for the vet to take the sticthes out ( so that he could check everything - he didn't!) and he did it in such a way and pussy footed around her that she thought he was a fly, he then cut himself and then carried on trying to take these stitches out in such an ineffectual manner while murmering "good mare " at my horse..... by this time I had to twich my mare to stop her killing him.

I also asked him to take alook at a suspicious lump on her chin ( she suffers from sarcoids) and he was so dismissive it was unreal. He then proceeded to rip the top of and said oh its nothing.... he didn't even ask any thing of her history, her name nothing.

My YM then asked him how he would proceed to bring her back into work when her field rest is over in a fortnight and he replied that he wouldn't even consider doing anything with her for another 8 weeks!! My discharge notes say that Ru's normal regime could be resumed after the two weeks but it doesn't mention any thing about re-introducing work so thats why my YM asked.... we were expecting start with x amuminutes of walk etc etc. I guess I will be ringing the RVC on monday for clarification

oh lord... I am so sorry this has turned into a rant

Please select what ever tipple and munchies that you want for putting up with this

He doesn't sound the most helpful vet in the world - is he a horse vet??

My practice has 2 fantastic horse vets (they really are amazing), but obviously they take leave etc, and the other vets in the practice aren't very horsy and therefore aren't much use. Invariably, my emergencies mostly happen when the good vets aren't on call.
