Is it possible to find a half decent horsebox for 2k???

Is it? Or am I just likely to end up with a heap of junk? Obviously I would take someone mechanical with me to check it over but I really don't have any more funds than this to put in. It would be to carry my 16.1hh.

Is there any type of lorry I should steer clear of (I won't be getting a ford transit!)

I can drive up to a 7.5 ton non hgv.

Where else should I be looking? I've been browsing on Ebay, here and Horsemart. Any ideas?
 
If Im totally honest Id say no Im afraid. If you do find one at that price I would make sure you put some money aside for any things that could go wrong, same with any horsebox really.
We knew of an old but well built horsebox that was sold for about £4k. The box was great, it looked ok but apparantly it was a death trap. It somehow passed its mot though???
I hope you do find something but please be careful, you could end up with a money pit. :(
 
I paid £1800 for a Merc 608D a few years back. Heap of junk.

Now have a Ford Cargo 0811, B reg, ( so about 25 years old) very sound. Guy who did the bits of work for the plating told me it was worth £7k!!!

I swapped a 1 year old Ifor 510 for it after contacting the owner who had it advertised on Ebay, with "swap for good trailer considered" in the ad.

I would think you might get something sound but tatty... but beware of plating bills. Older lorries always need something doing...
 
I'd say for that money the only thing you COULD get is a Ford Transit!

You might get a 30yr old 7.5 ton Bedford with a wooden box on the back, but I think even they'd command £3-4k unless a non runner.

I've had a Transit petrol that I paid £1900 for .... but that was over a decade ago, and then bought a diesel model which we got converted. But you couldn't have got a 16.1hh in it, only my 14.2hh and a Shetland!

It's tough but I think you'll need to keep saving :(
 
I've got a B Reg Ford Transit lol it's a piece of junk! Needs so much work doing to it and just generally old and rubbish but at the time I couldnt afford anything else and I can only drive up to 3.5T and they are generally 1 - 2k or 8k plus! ... Kind of wish I had just saved my money and brought something newer when I could afford it :( I have a feeling this will be very hard to get rid of!

My 16.2 Trakehner fits in it fine with room!
 
My friend paid £1500 last year for a F reg Leyland Roadrunner inc 6 months tax and about 10 months plating. She has just put it through the plating again and it only cost her about £200 for a couple of things that needed doing..

She has had to do a bit of tidying up but generally a great horsebox, never let her down.
 
I bought a very elderly very ugly 27 year old Leyland Terrier for around £1K five years ago. I had three years cheap and trouble-free use out of her. She started when nothing else would in the winter and although parts were difficult to obtain they were pretty cheap. As it was all so basic there was very little to go wrong. I sold her on ebay for £860.

If you are going to try to buy a cheapy then make sure you get it well looked over, anything with fresh paint or tarted up treat as suspect, what you want at that age is a lorry that has been regularly used. Mine was out at least three times a week and I'm sure that helped. You can do very well for yourself in a box that has no living, just a space. We had loads of fun with ours.
 
I think I'll keep looking but saving at the same time, every little helps!

Its nice to see that some people have had some luck with cheaper lorries, but as you say they need to be thoroughly checked over by a mechanic.
