Is it possible to put a "dressing/bandage/plaster" on a horse?

Bit of a weird one for you, I had my horse freezemarked a few weeks back. Its now scabbed over and they've dropped off, leaving pink skin showing.

This morning, after Id turned out, I realised that its now looking quite sore. (It wasn't like it yesterday) The flies were settling on it and Im not sure if that's the issue, or if its starting to sun burn :S

I covered it in fly repelling gel for today, and tonight Ill sudocrem it and use suncream tomorrow.

But I was wondering if there would be any way to cover it :S

Didn't have this with my mare cos it was winter :S

yes you can, at work we use large primapore or for post stifle arthroscopies we use a sticky backed type of foam on top of melanin. Your equine hospital should hae some or failing that use some elastopast to tape some melanin on.

Any normal dressing should be ok. Depends on other horses in the field though, anything playful may groom/ nibble it off. Mine had a kick on the shoulder and had staples that i wanted to keep clean, so used a dressing and some gaffer tape!! No issues as turnout was only limited and she was by herself.

I would go for Aloe Vera gel with a patch tacked into a fly sheet... that way you get the healing properties of the Aloe and the sun protection of the patch and sheet...

Hope that helps!

Strapping tapes works brilliantly for hard to bandage areas, just takes a while to get all the sticky patches off after.

Is it sunburnt then zinc cream might be an option?

I've used the spray on plaster you can buy quite successfully in the past. I check its completely clean and then spray a thick layer on. It looks a bit messy on the fur until it wears off but did seem to keep the wound fly free. Costs about £4 for a little can from the supermarket or chemist. I have also used a really thick layer of sudocrem or aloe gel to keep the flys from landing on the wound.

I often use mefix, gaffer tape or strapping tape for cuts in the summer. I have a self harmer anda boisterous youngster so tthere are lots of times they are needed!
