to sell a horse thats been diagnosed with caudal foot pain (aka navicular)?

A bit of background.... i have a beautiful 13yr old 15.3hh idxtb, she is a star, fantastic at hacking, brilliant in traffic, hacks alone or in company, other horses can gallop off and she will listen to what you want - wont follow the others unless you want to. She has been doing prelim dressage with me, she has been doing really well. She was diagnosed with caudal foot pain (aka nav) last summer and apart from going a little footy for one week in april when ground was like concrete she is sound - she is in eggbars but could prob go barefoot, I have decided that i am putting too much pressure on her by schooling lots, competing twice a week and really she would be happier just hacking, occasional schooling and lessons with someone else and i will get something who can keep up with what i want to do (novice/elem level) So my question is do you think the Navicular will put people off even though on no mediction and the only difference it makes is you have to be careful when ground hard (tbf i would do that with any horse!)???? She has so much to give someone, she is such a confidence giver, amazing temperment and i feel so **** at thinking of selling but i just cant afford to keep two. and if i loaned i think i would worry too much and I think it would easier emotionally if i sell her (only to right home)

also how much realistically should i price her at - so as to avoid losers who just want a cheap horse but to attract right sort of person and reflect her medical issue. I dont want her being sold on, i want a nice home where someone will love her and keep her and enjoy her.

thanks for your help.

your post is difficult to read because you've put the photos side by side....

I don't think she'll be EASY to sell. A lot of people won't want to take on a problem. Loaning may be easier, but can understand why you wouldn't want to. Have you thought about loaning but she has to tsya where she is? Again it can be difficult to find someone, but may be a compromise

I think if you sell her it will be all about price. I would maybe recomment writing POA and stating that obviously her condition is reflected in her sensible.

oh sorry -they appear underneath each other on my screen

I dont think i could see her every day on loan to someone else - in case i dont think they are doing things right i would want to interfere - then would prob end up with no loaner!

I love her to bits, and my options are sell (to right person) loan - but dont know if i can cope with it, emotionally as would prob worry 247 or compromise what i want to do - i dont really enjoy hacking that much so i would end up being miserable, but keeping my lovely horse.its all down to money.... its so difficult as on livery and just cant afford 2 horses.

would you be willing to have her on loan with a view to buy? that might enable people to see how sound she really is before making the commitment.

shes lovely but first thin i noticed is shes standing in a navicular stance....her front leg pointing forward, my daughters old pony had it and always stood like that,
i think you would be looking at a nominal fee, sorry

i think she was trying to walk towards me when taking pic - she normally stands quite straight. thats an old pic actually. about 3 yrs ago. she always seems to stand that way when i step back to take pic! -stands lovely until i get camera out then moves like a bugger!!! not photogenic!
its not really about the money, its just i want her have a nice home with someone who will love her and enjoy hacking, but i dont want her to be sold on. So yes would prob loan view to buy. at least i could check she was happy as well first so no regrets.

I really feel for you. I am in the same boat, pony broken with navic but rideable on certain sufaces so no competing but i have had to admit i can't afford to keep two so have had to stop looking.
Can't sell him as i don't trust where he would go and i couldn't do that to him so am thinking of getting a sharer who would like to hack him and hopefully cover some of his costs which would help me get another.
Good luck with whatever you decide :)

A friend of mine was in a sort of similar situation. She was left with the pony that her and her mum shared when her mum died. Unfortunately my friend would not afford the pony (it had been in the family for 10 years and her mum did the majority of funding and care). Said pony had arthritis and could be ridden gently on good ground by a sympathetic person who understood his requirements. He went out on loan to a few different people over the space of about 5 years, after he had been in his last loan home for a year my friend signed him over to his loaner for a nominal £1. The loaner adores him and is fully aware of his arthritis and my friend could not afford to have him back. This worked out really well and it may be that you could consider a loan initially for him.

Well just an update. A livery on my yard was looking for a safe hack for her partner to ride. He is a novice.
I was unsure at first if i could cope with her on our yard and seeing her every day- but they bought her and it is great. They are aware of her issues. they really love her already. They will look after her and have assured me they will never sell her no matter what (i have insisted i get first offer if they ever sell) - I couldnt be happier - its the right thing for the horse, she will be well happy just hacking and doing odd schooling session. The owners have a fantastic safe hack, who has one in a million temperment. and I can get another horse.
So all round has all worked out.
