It is possible to get a 3.5ton horse box that will carry a 17.2? Hieght as well as wieght?
Unless i take a test i cant drive our 7.5ton box so wondered, before i went down the route of taking my test are there any smaller boxes capable of carrying a big horse?
 
Yes, i guess it all depends on the weight you will be carrying. My old 17.2 fitted fine - with room to spare in mine and as he was only about 650/700 kilos he was well within the payload. I have a 16.3 chunky ID and he is long and about 750 kilos and at his heaviest 800 kilos and again we were within the weights. Just depends on what your payload is and how much other stuff you have in there and his weight.
 
What makes are the best for the bigger horses?
He is not very wide so not to heavy, he is in 7ft rugs so a decent length.
Normally it would just be me, horse and its tack
 
Any that is coachbuilt, as a 17.2hh will definitely not fit into a van conversion type.
As to on what chassis, most of them are on Vauxhall Movano or Renault Master anyway. You might want to avoid a Merc Sprinter as the chassis is heavy on those, so payload will be smaller.
The payload between the coachbuilders varies from about 900kg, to 1.4-1.5t, it is also reflected in price.
 
I have a Regent, it's on a Vauxhall Movano and i have I think 1100 payload and it is great. My ID is in 7/7'3 rugs and there is loads of room and as I said, my 17.2 Trakehner 7ft rugs fitted fine in there too. The only think you have to be careful about is the extras that you add, so you, passengers, water, tack even down to how much fuel you have in the tank.
