Not sure where to put this but I read the following and thought the stat seemed low...

"See this in perspective. About fifteen people are killed on average per year in horse riding accidents in England and Wales alone (Office for National Statistics). Horses are more dangerous than wolves"

If this is true it seems a low number...

I thought it was, I could count nearly that many from links and newspapers in 07 already! Thats just what we know about!
 
I'd be hard pushed to be killed by a wolf in the UK I think

Lol...I know! That stat was regarding the whole of Europe and the last 50 years.

Also just realised my title makes no sense....ooops you can tell I'm not awake!

Sounds about right to me TBH! Thats more than one a month!

It might make horses more dangerous than wolves, but it does make them a hell of a lot safer than cars!
 
Just googled it & interestingly these are quotes off the first two sites that came up

"Every year there are at least 3,000 reported accidents involving horses on our roads; that is the equivalent of eight a day. A recent report suggests that this figure might be nearer to twenty-nine a day; that’s over 10,500 a year. On average five riders and over one hundred horses are killed on the roads every year. Surely this alone justifies our need for safe off-road riding?"

Hmm, statistics are interesting little buggers arent they!
 
5 sounds very low, I could count that amount this year alone and thats without the ones we don't know and don't read about.

Thats 600 road accidents aswell, doesn't include eventing, point to pointing, racing, general schooling, bla bla! It does seem low.
 
Off on a tangent slightly but I work at the Office for Nat Stats (on the IT side though). My guess is that the stats have come off the death certs that are sent in each year - although it did say 'average' numbers.
