To only go for training with your trainer when a problem arises?
Just had to persuade one of my teachers to train me again just because Ive not had a lesson for ages

No, I don't think it's rude at all

unless of course inbetween times you have been having training with someone else and raving to old trainer about how good new trainer is

which I am sure you haven't been.

Surely any trainer can appreciate us mere mortals aren't made of money!

I don't think its rude at all. The thing is, I would love to have lessons weekly at least but just can't afford it. I go roughly every fortnight and consider myself fortunate to be able to but not all the time. When funds are tighter than usual I have to 'drop' my 'luxuries' and this includes lessons. My trainer is brilliant and never makes me feel awkward or embarrassed. I can ring her anytime for advice freely given. xx

maybe have a monthly one just to keep you ticking over - we all (no matter how advanced) pick up small habits along the way....

I think it depends on the relationship you have with your trainer. My trainer choses only to train people who want to have regular lessons rather than occasional one-offs. I know his views on this and so if I'm going to have a break for any reason (say because I've got a lot of competitions coming up, or due to finances) I let him know in advance so he doesn't think I've just disappeared. We are both happy with this set up.

Having done some freelance teaching myself I found it a bit rude when one of my long-standing regulars just stopped having lessons with no warning and then wanted me to instantly be available some months later. She ended up missing out as in the meantime I had other clients who had taken her regular lesson slot and she couldn't do another time due to her other commitments.

I don't think its rude - my husband's just says come when you can/want to. Obviously if it's this ad hoc you have to be flexible as to when they have time available for you.

Astra I think you hit the nail on the head with exactly how my trainer is feeling at the mo. I think that I should have done what you do when you decide not to have training for a while!
You see, I dont exactly plan things- I dont think- 'Right- Im not going to have a lesson for 4 months' I decide to have a lesson when I a) have the money b) have the time and c) when I feel I need it !! so that can mean that I'll either have a lesson every week or so or it may mean that it wont be for months!
This teacher is very very professional, very competitive and extremely hard working and puts her all into her pupils. I think that this is what is different from a competitive trainer and a laid back trainer who does not compete at the top of their game. So I guess that they do have to be taken a lot more seriously if you want their help!
But I must admit that this confrontation today knocked me for six! Am rather upset that she said that she didnt really want to train me again, she said that she will think about it!

B&J- hope she didnt catch wind of how brilliant I thought SG was as I was telling everyone! But she is a dressage teacher, Sams an eventer- surely she wouldnt mind that?!

I'm with you. If I'm working towards something I have regular lesson, or if a problem comes up, otherwise I'm quite sporadic about it. My instructor keeps her horse on the yard and teaches several other liveries so I see her around anyway, so she knows what's going on. I usually just text her to see when she can next fit me if I need a lesson, then I work around her.
