As some of you may know, I'm looking to buy a horse.

When you first viewed/rode your current horse, did you click with him? Did you know he was 'the one'?

Because yesterday I visited a TB for sale, and he was very nice, and pretty much fitted what we wanted, but I didn't click with him, like I've done with some horses, and I wanted to know if I'm just being to fussy?

Gut feel is a very good indicator.

I have had quite a few horses over the years but only 2 that were special to me. Both these horses I knew were right for me the instant I sat on them. They are the only 2 horses that I have felt this on.
 
Both my girls did click with their horses when they first rode them. My youngest has a face which is a open book and I could tell both times by the massive grin on her face when she rode them!

I think you have to feel you can bond with the horse because it's a very close relationship.
 
i clicked with archie when touched him! i just knew he was the one but this is the only time. and have had some other amazing bonds. good luck finding yours x
 
I had a tear in my eye when I first saw Oliver because I never thought I would find such a nice looking horse. Obviously, he isn't everyone's cup of tea as a lot of people on here don't like Warmbloods but I just loved the way he looked as soon as I saw him - he has such kind, gentle eyes.
 
To some extent I think it is, I fell in love with Flash the moment I saw him and just knew he would be mine, even though he actually didn't fit any of my specifications! My sister has been riding a horse belonging to a friend of mine, and the moment she got on it you could see they just clicked and I've never seen her have such a bond, now the horse is available to loan/buy and almost feel it would be crazy to let it slip by! I think you will know when you have found the right horse, its a gut feeling, good luck hunting!

Someone I knew had bought her in haste and they were really badly matched in lots of ways (in fact in nearly every way

). I was offered her and for first time ever was in a position to buy a horse. Plus she was really cheap!

I had her on loan for a month and even at the end of that I was still unsure. I liked her and felt she really needed a chance as she had had a dreadful life. However Ellie didn't particularly like people, she had no reason to because no one had taken the time to get to know her and some had even treated her very badly. She could be very dominant and bolshy and reacts very badly to being bossed or 'made to'. Anyway in the end I gritted my teeth and went for it. I am soooo glad I did. Three years later and she is a different horse now. Still has her moments but we are in love

I didn't click with Chex at all when I tried him, but he was the first pony we went to see, and we weren't actually looking! I was so desperate for a pony I said I wanted him (I was only 12)! But it all turned out ok, 9 years later and he is just the most amazing pony!!
 
I knew as soon as I clapped eyes on Fin that he was just what I was looking for and I have never doubted it since. Nuala made me smile. When my daughter tried her current pony, she clicked right there and then - although I absolutely detested it! Common sense prevailed (eventually - pony was for daughter after all, not me) and she's been here almost a year. I grin as broadly as daughter does when they are together. Son's pony was also a dead cert from the minute I saw him. They are all very different but all very perfect for us. You will not be able to get THE ONE out of your head. Even though Merry was the total opposite of what I like in a pony (not any more though!) I still kept having this picture of them pop into my mind and it wouldn't go away. You WILL know

Not me and the boy - he was a freebie and I really was not sure if I wanted to take him on. His gait felt unfamiliar, I was not used to riding or handling a big wobbly tb and he seemed to have a dead personality.

Took him on a months trial and thanks to plenty of feed and hay, a regular routine and some patient schooling and fun weekends he came good and we clicked after that.

Would you consider a trial?
 
I did buy a horse called rosey, she was my 'dream' horse.black chunky lots of feather, absolutely gorgeous holds herself perfectly in an outline with no rider effort,rocking horse canter but we just didnt click,
on the other hand i bought bailey as he had something about him.... and he was also tethered on a big chain!.even though he is smaller than i would have looked at,i wasnt even looking for a horse at the time either,we have a really good bond and couldnt imagine EVER getting rid of him, i have been offered alot of money for him but just couldnt sell him!
go with your gut feeling
 
Mine "appeared" in the stable next to my last horse and I adored his personality immediatly. He was so cheerful and loved cuddles and hugs although his condition was dire... had no topline, rather skinny and was GREY (swore id never have a grey)

He was on the yard for approximately a week before I actually sat on him... Trainer kept telling me he was perfect for me but my OH wasn't having any of it

First ride i knew instantly. I couldn't ride one side of him in trot... felt like I was being projected into orbit every stride and couldn't control his power at all. (We trotted round with him completly hollow and star gazing but I STILL loved him!)

He's incredibly cheeky and quirky and he's a really difficult horse to ride because he knows every damn trick in the book to evade.

On the other hand, he's making me a good rider which is what I wanted all along.

All this being said, we did have quite strict criteria about what we wanted when we started looking. Even though I adored his personality, we wouldn't have considered him if he hadn't ticked all the boxes.

ETS - I had a month trial with mine though too! We paid a deposit but I got 4 weeks of riding him to make sure he was definitly the one for me.... and I still cant thank his old owner enough for that.
 
when i went to try my horse, she ran off with me (well, i couldent stop her!) and said i didnt want her. was encouraged to go back to see her and 5 years later she is still with me!

No, not fussy at all! It's a relationship afterall! Do you click with your friends/partner/other pets? You have to like your horse for him/herself, not just what he/she can do! And yes, I clicked with mine - all of the ones I've had, even on loan!
 
No, you are not - I would always advise having a good look around when buying anything, let alone a horse! It is not just a financial commitment, it is an emotional one as well. Don't rush into anything, there are thousands or horses out there, get the one that is right for you.
 
It has been love at first sight for me, before even getting on. Trust your gut instinct. I am sure you will find a horse that you can bond with. After all it is a partnership
 
My mare is my 3rd horse. I clicked with her almost the moment I sat on her and I've adored her ever since. I didn't get this with my others and I never felt the relationship was right with them.
 
Yes as soon as I sat on my first horse I knew I had to buy him (even though I wasn't looking to buy at the time!) - had him 16years now, when I was looking for my second horse I tried loads and none felt right and I ended up with an unbroken 3yo I fell for straight away and we have a very good bond, so yes go with your gut instinct, good luck.
 
With my horse it was love at first sight and he came to me aswell!

i had been currently helping out with a pony as old my loan horse had been sold

And on day my little man, who was neglected and looked in a sorry state. i cliked with him instantly and he would always come over to say hello and ended up walking round the field backwards reversing into me until i sctratched his bum for him.

It was a month or soo before i rode him and that was only becasue the pony i was helping out with was lame and the person who was supposed to be schooling him for the owner (that was never there) said i could ride him

Whenever the girl who supposed to be training him got on him he would rear buck nap and anything you could think of and hacking alone you couldnt even think about.
I bought him and once id got him a saddle as he had no tack i went for a hack as we have no school and he didnt put a foot wrong

i had apent all week playing with him and grooming him and in turn he gave me a lovely ride!

The other person would drag him in from the field once in a blue moon, put a saddle that probs didnt fit him (even though she wouldnt put a bit in becaue he hadnt had his teeth checked) didnt even brush him and expected to behave himseld and go perfectly!)

so i think you do know which horse is for you

though i also believe that you can learn no bond with each other and what first might seem an unlikely pair can build a strong bond too!
