I posted a while back about my loan horse and the problems we'd been having. Well we've made the decision and he will be going back, not sure when exactly though.

When he goes I will have an empty stable and am not sure what i should do...
This particular yard has a waiting list so would be many more months until i could get another stable should i give this one up. But i would have to pay £110 per month to keep this stable whether there is a horse in it or not. The yard is the cheapest in the area and has great facilities - so would not consider keeping a horse elsewhere.

Now i cannot afford to buy a horse but loaning one is a definite option. However i have had a bit of a bad experience with my current loan horse and as a result have lost a lot of confidence.

Is it really possible to get a nice confidence giver on loan that has a good few years of work left in it??
Alot of the ads i have seen are for very young horses or very old ones. But the ones in between are 'not novice ride' etc. I am not a novice but need a horse that can help me regain my confidence and also a horse that my novice partner could ride sometimes. So a schoolmaster type would be exactly what we need.

I would ideally like to loan with a view to buying after maybe a year or so.

Is it worth holding on to the stable (and paying for it) whist searching for the right horse or is it virtually impossible to loan something as described above?

Its definatly worth keeping the stable. I'd pay if the yard was great. I can't help re the loan horse, but I'm sure that if you're not in a huge rush the right horse will be out there!

Good luck

I haven't read your posts, but what sort of thing are you looking for? You'll be lucky to find something that will do everything and be 100% - I really don't think they exist (atleast for loan). What probs where you having with loan horse?

I'll be looking for something 15.2 upwards mare or gelding dont mind. Safe to hack alone and in company, capable of a bit of dresaage, xc, sj but nothing serious. I'm not looking for a world beater i just want a nice safe horse that myself and my novice partner can both enjoy. would it be too difficult too find something like that to loan?

The owner of my current loan horse advertised him as an angel but he is far from it! He is so stubborn, often grumpy and very very spooky all of this to the point that he is often dangerous. Needless to say i have lost quite a bit of confidence.

Unfortunatley yes - myself and OH have been looking for something for him on loan and they're like rocking horse poo!

My boy is probably going back on loan soon but he does need someone confident on the ground - he's had novices on him but unfortunately there will be time when he won't want to pass something etc (although that's not very often) so they are out there!

I have been around horses for a very long time so am confident on the ground. Current loan horse was a nightmare to handle, very bolshy and used to bite all the time and generally too big for his boots, but i have corrected all that and he's fine to handle now. So groundwork not an issue.

Just need something that will give me back my confidence riding-wise and look after novice partner.
