I am now looking at getting some decent sort of base layer/thermals, after last winter getting chill blains on my legs, i want to be prepared!! I have heard that merino wool is reaaly warm and supposedly not itchy, and is nice and soft like fleece, but just wondered if this is true and if anybody had actually found it to be itchy. I cant wear normal wool as it just drives me mad!
TIA , nothing to offer other than stale crackers :/

Not if you go for the super pricey ones! Icebreaker are very good. I've got a trekmates one, it's not bad. I always thought I had bulldozer skin but it's actually quite sensitive.

They have merino base layer sets in aldi with the cycling stuff coming up tomorrow, they're 15.99 for either top or bottoms. I've been wondering the same thing as I find wool sooo itchy and makes my skin bumpy! Apparently merino is anti microbial too.

I get very bad chilblains on my thighs and all over my feet and like you, find wool impossible to wear. I spent most of last winter in a pair of Aldi's salopettes and their ski socks. Best £16 I have ever spent, I think. Their ski gloves were very useful, too. They have a polythene layer so didn't matter if you were breaking ice on buckets, if they got wet your fingers didn't freeze.

My Merino is the best thing I ever bought, doesn't pong! Wears well, warm in winter, cool in summer. Doesn't itch, but not fleecy, more like a softish linen kind of feel.... well worth it.

Thanks everyone, but think i shall try the tops and bottoms first before trying out the knickers!!! Just incase i do find it itchy i dont want to be wearing the knickers walking about scratching lol!!!

Merino wool is gorgeous against the skin - I too am an itchy person - wool drives me insane. As a child I hated winter when we had to wear our Chilproof vests for school.

Go for pure Merino and your chilblanes will be a thing of the past.

I can't wear wool at all (even over a cotton t-shirt it drives me crazy). Merino seems to be completely different and is not itchy at all. Merino base layers are the best thing I ever bought for winter horse work :)
