Is my new horse lame?

Without going into detail OP was a little overwhelmed. However she has taken on board the advice and is following it.
I was worried about that when I read through. It was a LOT to take on board.
Op, everyone here is behind you! You came for advice and you’ll get not only that but really good support and back up too.
Hope you’re ok, he’s a lucky boy to have an owner who cares enough to acknowledge somethings not quite right and ask the questions.

Hi everyone.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the support and I do appreciate everyone's advice and opinions. It was overwhelming with so much information, but I'm definitely taking in the advice as well as from my farrier and vet.

Update: we took his shoes off and he did have some pretty bad thrush hiding underneath the pads and shoes (left front and left hind). We are currently treating that and hope he will become more comfortable. Based on the advice of my vet, we will wait until that is healed to do a full lameness exam. He is also being treated for ulcers for the next 30 days. He has been dewormed as well. He had his teeth checked and I was told they were done, but not to a high level, so he has an appointment this Saturday to get them redone. Micronised linseed has been ordered and waiting for that to come in so I can add it to his feed. But I have discontinued the conditioning feed and will be focusing on feeding a more ulcer friendly diet.

I'll give another update when we've made some progress :) Thanks everyone.

Well the thrush explains the stifled paces and with the other changes you're making I hope you see a bright new shiny sound horse as his spring coat comes in. A better diet might enable him to go without the pads, too, as it should also be better for his feet.

Well done for getting stuff sorted.

Well done, I have been where you are and it is very overwhelming but sounds like he has a lovely owner in you.

Sounds like a good plan of action. Keep us updated :) x

Thrush can be a buggar! What are you treating it with? I used purple spray (tried a few other things and none seemed to work well) and a weekly dollop of copper sulfate, but I’d ask for farrier/vet advice on that before you do.

Good luck and I hope to see an update again :)

He's a lucky horse to have found you!
Just a word of warning about the linseed. I was very surprised to find that my cob reacted very badly to it, with sores on her hind legs which have taken months to clear up properly. My advice is to add it gradually to feed and monitor carefully.

Good ,
thrush can make horses very sore and miserable and that effects their general well-being and condition .
The good news is that it’s an easy fix with management and routine management.
Spring is coming and horses tend to be easier to get right in spring rather than winter .

Great update! Sounds like you’re already on the right track :)

I’ve inherited horses in poor condition and my tip would be to only photograph once a month- that way you’ll really see the differences (and hopefully progress). It’s tempting to do it more often, but I’ve found it more difficult to see and can feel unnecessarily demoralising.

Wishing you the best of luck and looking forward to hearing more ❤️
