Opinons on this gratefully received!

I've recently bought a 2nd hand 450x Buster turnout. Seller is not unknown to me and the rug is the 2010 version and is in excellent condition - very little signs or wear and tear. Seller claimed to have used this rug a few times in the snow last year and I believe them as it is such good condition!

I have used this rug for several days in the rain recently and I almost needed a wheel barrow to take it from the stable to the barn - it seems to absorb sooooo much water! Can't be good for my horse? Shouldn't the water run off? Then, in even heavier rain yesterday, my horse had a damp patch on his flanks when he was brought in.

Contacted seller and the rug has never been washed or proofed. Is this a dodgy PE rug?

I am suspicious as my only other PE purchase leaked like a sieve (70g) and have seen posts on here about leaky PE rugs.

Seller is annoyed at PE and has offered to pay for the rug to be re proofed.

Will this work? Should I contact PE?

Many thanks in advance

x

I think i would be speaking with PE about the rug personally, though they are more likely going to want to speak with the original purchaser.
What ever make of the rug i would be speaking with manufacturer as in my eyes if the rug has not been washed/reproofed and is leaking then it is not fit for purpose.

I have a 100g PE turnout rug which is brilliant no damp or leaking in the heaviest of rain.

Let us know how you get on, good luck

I'm with Teenie - all the PE rugs i've had have been 100% waterproof. One was on a horse that lived out 24/7 rain or shine. Even on the most grotty days and nights he was never ever wet from the rug leaking -just the odd bit run down his neck etc.
Speak with PE - but as noted previously they may wish to speak with purchase unless you have sellers proof of purchase.
Good luck

We wash/reproof/repair rugs at work and the PE ones are SOOO heavy, they seem to hold the water like a sponge...and then take forever to dry!

I agree that the rug must be faulty. My PE rug has several little holes in it, and it still doesn't leak, even in the heaviest downpours!

I've several PE rugs of differant weights, had them years but none are leaky. My 450g yesterday was very heavy but it rained heavily all day however it hadn't leaked at all, popped it back on today & soon dried out in the lovely weather we had today!

PE rugs seem to have a dedicated following! And because all these rave reviews I bought one this year.

Dry it was very heavy, wet it was ridiculous. Then within a week it was leaking like a sieve.

I wasn't best chuffed with their initial suggestion that I buy another rug off them (so that I had one) and then return the one that was leaking! They also were very off putting in me returning it - stating that their rugs rarely leak.

I insisted that it was returned and to be fair to them within a few hours of them receiving it they had returned my money together with the postage I paid to return it.

However I would never buy one of these rugs again, even if it hadn't leaked it was stupidly heavy. The liners on the other hand are good value and fit perfectly in horseware rugs - which I have returned to and should never have deserted in the first place !

It would be worth the person who bought it off them phoning them - it was every seam on mine that leaked and the watermarks were clearly visable.

I hate there rugs, had two plus a liner and they broke , the big spring loaded clips they used broke within days. Also yes, far too heavy when wet, mine got slung in a corner after very little use. I wouldn't buy from them again.

I had the same with a lightweight from them. The front velcro kept undoing and it leaked even in a summer shower. When I rang them they said that I couldn't have done the rug up properly and their rugs didn't leak! I know lightweight are not meant to be completely waterproof but I have never had a problem with any of my horseware rugs and even manage to do them up properly!

I bought the 70g after reading rave reviews and i've got to say that paddy has had it on day and night for months and despite some horrendous rain , it hasn't leaked so far? I do have the neck attachment with the slightly elasticated top , which i think is one of the best features as it stops rain and wind blowing down the neck , but you guys are right that it is stupidly heavy when wet and i'll probably go back to horseware when the need arises.

I have the 450g neck rug on my mare and it NEVER leaks.. it's now going into its seventh winter and is still in lovely condition - oh, and I wash it every year and have never re-proofed it!

They've always been good when I've spoken to them, if you call and say it's leaking like a seive and you've only used it 3 times then they should send you a new one if you send back the old one - i.e. the goods they sell must be "fit for purpose".
