Just out of interest i was wandering if you think a weeks notice for leaving a yard is enough? I rent the place but have had so many problems with the owner, such as him having a fire in the field i rent with my ponies loose in it!

He now wants me to replace fencing which was falling apart before i moved there and is also dictating which fields i can use and when, even though i rent the whole place! the final straw was yesterday when someone (i have no idea who) went in my barn and put a whole big bale of hay out to my ponies... 1 this would have all been wasted if i hadn't saved half of it and put it back in the barn, and 2 he didnt seem bothered that someone had gone on the land without any of us knowing! (he lives on site... ) yet he seems to know my every move up there!
Now i dont have a written contract, and out of anger did consider putting a note through the door the day i took ponies, but i know this is very wrong so will not do this. I have got a new yard to rent and plan to move the end of the month so would a week be long enough?

Sorry for rant didnt mean it to be so long... Chocolate on offer to all who have read this far...

If you have no contract and have never agreed anything I would think a week is reasonable. I left my last yard (which I rented solely) after 10 happy years there and left on good terms but I gave a month's notice as wanted to remain on good terms and only moved due to location.

The normal is the length of time you pay for, eg, if you pay weekly, one weeks notice, if you pay monthly, one months notice.

depends on your contract verbal or written. how do you pay at the moment? weekly or monthly? did you pay a deposit? did you do an inventory when you moved in? take pics when you moved in? otherwise you will probably be liable for the repairs etc.

I pay monthly cash... there was no deposite and it was never stated how much notice would be needed!
I did look around the place and ponited out problems... His response was i could do what i wanted to the place. Now i have fixed up the barn and made it safe for use.. Previous person left it in a state with nails and wood all over the place. I started fixing fencing using wood and stock fencing that he said i could use, but now he wants me to buy posh rails to make the place look better!!! I feel like he basically wants me to pay to do his yard up!

if no contract then assume you don't need to give any notice, however - verbal contract can be enough - have you ever agreed how much notice you would give?

to be polite i'd normally want to give as much notice as I pay rent (so then you'd give a months notice as you pay monthly)
but if i'm not being nice - then gah - sod it - I'd go straight away!

good luck
