Ponies are due to be wormed soon and was just wondering if Panacur would be ok to use at this time of the year?

They have been previously wormed with Equest & Equest Pramox but one pony got pin worms last summer so we want to change this year to try and prevent it happening again.

Thanks

Is it the 5 day your talking about? If so I don't think this time of year for that. Think nov or feb? But I'm willing to be corrected! :)

You would generally worm for tapeworm this time of year, which Panacur doesn't cover.

I would recommend going and speaking to your worming expert at your local feed store and see what they recommend.

If you want to worm for tapeworm you could use a double dose of strongid P.

Or you could use the Equimax as it contains Ivermectin which treats several types of worms but also contains Praziquantel which can be used for the treatment of tapeworms.

Def go into your local tack shop and ask. If they sell wormers they have to have an SQP who is qualified to sell wormers and can therefore answer any questions you have.
The only way of knowing wether you can use panacur is by doing a worm egg count, then worming with panacur and then doing another worm egg count. If the worm eggs decrease then the wormer works and if they dont decrease then the wormer doesnt work!
As already said it isnt the time of year to worm with pancur now. It is used for encysted small redworm so you would use it in december.
If you havnt wormed for tapeworm yet this spring then you will need to do that. As already said you can use strongid P as long as you double dose or equimax if you dont want to use equest pramox. Its always a good idea to rotate the wormers you use anyway to prevent resistance.
Hope that helps abit!!!

The one with pinworms was wormed with Panacur towards the end of the autumn which worked really well. He was wormed with Pramox in the spring but the other horses on the yard were wormed with just the Equest.

Just had a look at this website which suggests Panacur can be used at this time of the year?

It's so confusing

It depends if you are talking about panacur 5 day guard or pancur granules?
If he has already been wormed with pramox this spring then you do not need to re-worm for tapeworm now as you have already done it.
Why dont you do an Egg count, then if he is clear you dont have to worm at all?

The drug that treats the worms in the paste is fenbendazole, this is the same drug that is in the panacur guard. It is part of the benzimadole family and is licensed to treat encysted redworms and large redworms, roundworms and pinworms.

Might be worth popping into your local tack shop and seeing what they have to offer and what they advise to worm with this time of year.

It is important to rotate the class of wormer you use on your horse over the year to avoid the build up of resistance to wormer. The problem with most Benzimidazole wormers (of which Fenbendazole is one) is that because they have been around the longest, they have been over used and worm populations have become resistant to the drug, in effect, this means that the wormer is less and less effective over a period of time.

A WEC can be done prior to worming, and again afterwards to judge the effect of a wormer - if it is less than around 90% effective, then you have a resistance problem and should no longer use that class of wormer.

Its worth remembering though that a WEC will not show up tapeworm which is a common worm at this time of year. You will need a blood test to determine whether your horse has a high tapeworm burden.

I'm an SQP and would recommend that you get a WEC done to see what the problem is, then go from there. Most people use wormer far too regularly imo!
