Is Propell Plus Rocket Fuel (or is my pony just naughty)?

Just wondered if anyone had experienced Propell Plus having a quite extreme effect?! I have a horse who is usually a very smart SJ and had 5 rails

in the Novice at BCA last week - he had also been well-behaved in the dressage and in the lorry so deduced there must be something wrong with him

and didn't run him xc. Gave him a few easy days then took him to Dauntsey on Sunday to see how he felt as there were no obvious symptoms and no chance to get him blood tested and results back before the weekend. He pinged round for a pleasing double clear so it seems whatever was affecting him on Wed was better. However, decided to put him on something as if he has had a bit of a virus he might need some help recovering and he has Aldon 1* coming up. So I bought some Propell Plus and used it last night: double dose as they suggest. Well, today he was bonkers

And I remembered that someone has said to me PP can cause this sort of reaction... Just wondered what everyone else's experiences were. Would quite like to keep him on it to boost his immune system, but not if he's going to dump me (which he SOOOOOOOOO nearly did today

!

I learnt from a certain head groom

that of all the 'pick me up' type things, ie Propell, RedCell and ViSorbin.. RedCell was most prone to blowing the brain too, as well as Propell to a certain extent.. if your horse needs a 'pick me up' but can be a bit of a hot head, Vi-Sorbin is the one to put them on... Good to know, as Ernie is a hot head, and i had him on Propell..

Ah, thanks for that! (Is that a certain "award-winning" head groom?

) ViSorbin it is then while I'm still alive. Anyone want to buy an almost full tub of Propell Plus? Oops, that's probably advertising, try "Anyone have any ideas what I can do with an almost full tub of PP, only one (double) dose removed?"

So to translate, if they are pretty skizzy to start with it could indeed send them skyward?

If your horse is normally "bright" it will certainly send them skyward!!

It's not your imagination ...

Well judging by mine, 24 hours!! Seriously, though, I suspect they put some sugary stuff in to give them a boost which would work pretty much straightaway, but if they are really under the weather the more important ingredients like the iron and other minerals would take a little while to kick in I would think. It's a question of the difference between feeling better (sugar boost, like from a bar of chocolate) and being better I guess

Hmm I might try some, as mine was ill with his low white blood cell etc, he is on some ecchinea stuff at the moment and has about a weeks worth left and I'd like to run him at Rodbaston but only if he has his spark left. I will have to see if my tack shop has some and if it can be mixed with the other stuff.

PP has echinacea as well as all the other stuff, but I wouldn't think you can o/d on it, it's only a herb, although someone will probably come on here now and say it is lethal to o/d

Hope your pony is better soon

ooooo....sounds like I could do with trying this stuff!!!......

Do they need to have something wrong with them first???!!!

I used propell once and seriously perked my horse up. But last year my horse had a virus and put him on Aloe Vera, which doesn't cause such uncontrolable fizz but totally boosted his low white blood cell count which just wasn't lifting. I didn't want to use propell as thought it could 'fake' the way he was feeling. Aloe Vera amazing would recommend it to anyone with horse virus. Not expensive and totally natural - Barrier Equine!!!

Try Emune to boost their immune system and perk them up: it worked a treat when Hector had a bit of a virus a couple of years ago. I've pumped HH full of Propell to get him to Tweseldown in some sort of lively state.
