I was looking at the breeding of the runners in this years Derby and saw that 1/2 the field including those finishing 1st 3rd and 4th were all by Galileo or in 1 case the dam was.

I know very little about breeding but was wondering if such dominance is good for the future of Thoroughbreds. I know Sadlers Wells was similarly very dominent in the past and whether this has been a good thing I wouldn't know. Montjeu again has been used extensively and I think I'm right in saying his temperament left a lot to be desired and that was passed on to plenty of his offspring?

I know a fair bit about breeding dogs and it can be very bad for a particular breed if 1 dog is overused for breeding. A breed of dog had it's previous sound temperament badly damaged by a winner of Crufts many many years. To this day the breed still isn't quite what it used to be.

I'd be very interested in the opinions of those who know about the "blue riband" end of Thoroughbred breeding.

For sport horses I loathe Saddlers Wells. There are lines that I always look for and sadly they are slowly being extinguished by the Saddlers Wells dominance. The horses that I really love tend to have good NH bloodlines but they tend to be slower to mature.
The only one I would make an exception for is Old Vic as I love his damline so much it would make up for the Saddlers Wells. He has the perfect sporthorse damline with Derring Do who I am a massive fan of and I loved him when he was a race horse.

National Hunt does not have such a dominance with sires cleaning up everything because the distances are so varied and the challenges with jumping and the ground making it far more open so I think this allows a variety of stallions into the picture. The problem on the flat is all the good races are a mile and a half and on the flat so this is why we see such dominance by some sires.

Interesting, I've had Galileo, Montjeu, Sadler's Wells, Pivotal, Hubbly Bubbly and King Mambo ex racers and adore the Sadler's line. Would have another in a heartbeat.

We have Used the Sadlers Well line through Oscar in one of our boys we sold to be sports horse he learning his job really well and showing a lot of talent
