Hi, iv just been schooling one of my horses to really step under herself, she has a very uphill canter at the end of a schooling session, and recently out hacking, she has started to over reach in trot and walk..with no change to tack, or feed.
is this a good sign to go buy that she is working in a much deeper outline, and stepping under herself more?
thanks xxxx

no, overreaching is a sign of unbalance and she can injure herself doing it. do you mean overtracking or forging?

No, iv got overreach boots on her, shes clipping........
if you say its a sign of unbalance..is there such a way i can improve it??
many thanks

over reaching is where the hinds are coming through before the front feet have lifted and the hinds are clipping her front heels, hence the potential for injury. a possible caause is her running in the pace, so you could try slowing her a little to give her time to establish a true gait, or she could be on her forehand, might be partly to do with confirmation or her natural way of going. Hard to tell without seeing.

If you are hearing a metalic clip then it's forging she is doing, similar to the above, but where the toe of her hind clips the shoe of the front, less risk of injury doing this, but it's still not a good thing. Again, giving her time in the pace to establish a true gait or sequence of footfalls, your still riding forward into a nice supportive contact, but so that she is not hurried. See if that helps/makes sense. Your really need someone on the ground to see what the problem is and what is the cause.

Sounds like she's either on the forehand or unbalanced - like my instructor says you've got to slow down the front end whilst maintaining the back end impulsion - lots of half halts required!

no over reaching is bad and doesnt mean shes 'stepping through' just shes probably on her forehand and the back end is literally stepping on the front.
her feet could need a good trim or she may need her back/tack seeing to.or maybe shes is rushing in her work and needs to be more balanced.

IMO - You ride nicely and the two of you don't look too bad at all. I think she is over reaching because she's abit on the forehand. I think what A+S ment by too much upper movement is your over riding (I'm one for this too) causing her too rush. Watch your self ride into her in canter.

Ps - I really like her
