Morning all, thanks in advance for any advise... Had my 3yo horse gelded approx 5months ago, all went well although in my opinion after having other horses gelded before the cuts were huge, he healed well, (took a very long time) only one course of antibiotics was needed so no secondary infection. Yesterday I noticed a swelling on his sheath, we're his testicles once were but only prominent on one side (side which had the biggest cut and took the longest to heal) you would almost think there was another testicle with massive swelling, up until this all had been fine, no swelling or mass and checked at least once a week once he had healed and latest check was two weeks ago and nothing there, called vet immediately who after examination declared its either a adverse reaction to being gelded or it's one of the tubes has become infected and lain dormant until now??? In his opinion horse requires immediate surgery, he's well in himself, happily working away, have just backed him and eating like there's no tomorrow, after exercising or being out in field swelling goes right down but there is the feeling of a mass about the size of a tennis ball, have put him on oral anitbiotics and bute for a week to give it a chance, any advise or if some one has had exp of this before?? I have had countless horses gelded and have ever ad a problem or heard of this...........

Reason given was that it would get worse as the end of the cords were either inflamed or infected which I find hard to believe as he has had no symptoms since being gelded, and that all the scasrrign would have to be cut away, again if its an adverse reaction to being gelded will he not go through the same again...... Have over this past year lost all faith in this particular vet....

I had my, now, 3 year old Shires gelded when they were 18 months old. One boy bleed quite a bit, the other didn't. About 9 months ago I noticed one of the boys looked as if he had a testicle in a scrotal sack. It was soft, not hot or sensitive, and the gelding didn't seem to be bothered at all. When I asked the vet about it, he said it was fluid, and that I shouldn't worry about it. He said the only problem I might have is cosmetic...especially if I decided to show him (which I haven't). The "testicle" has disappeared in the ensuing months.

I would definitely get another opinion, especially if you've lost confidence in this vet. The last thing you need is an unnecessary surgery.

I had a friend with a horse that you would have sworn was a stallion - two clear balls! But not testicles, it was a gelding. It never gave the horse any trouble.

yes but fluid is a natural occurance post op, this is not post op... Its five months on. OP it could be any amount of things, it could be a small amount of dirt/debris, wich over time has caused scar tissue and icky stuff to build up to such an extent that it is now hard and visible. unless removed, it would just continue to be a problem and get worse. This seems to me to be a perfectly reasonable possibility although i have not had it happen to my horses, I have not had many gelded. If you are so skeptical get a second opinion, but I do not see that what your vet is saying is so wrong or impossible.

Mine wasn't post-op...it was well over a year after surgery. Had it been post-op I would have assumed it was a direct result of the procedure.

Well after a weeks course of antibiotics and bute everything went back to normal but after a couple of days without meds it's flared back up again and whilst on bute he didn't mind you having a feel now off bute he's objecting so in my opinion it's sore, going to speak to original vet today and ask to be referred....
