Is the grass really growing already??

Our horses haven't eaten all of their hay 3 nights in a row now.

We have a 15.2hh cob, a 16.22 TB and a 17hh ISH.
They get the equivalent of 2 bales a day, half in the morning and half at night in a large Hay Hutch in the field between the 3 of them and usually gobble it all!

The last few mornings I have gotten to the field and they have only eaten half of what they have been given! Plus they have been in the far part of the field and not waiting at the gate for me to arrive!

They are on approx 5 acres but they have been on it all winter so it's pretty sparce! All look in fab condition though, so I can only guess that the grass must be growing!!??

I really hope that it is, or starts soon, i've got NONE & horses are eating me out of house & home :-( Can it have possibly been growing under all the snow & ice we've recently had?

I saw one of my neighbours out with his lawnmower yesterday! Thought he was a tad sharp IMO but as said, things are sprouting!

Not for us it isn't. My lot are getting four bales a day now and are still telling me they are hungry! I'm getting some big bales this weekend so they can adlib for the past of the winter

Well even though our mares field looks like a brown carpet with the merest hint of green, I definitely think there's something coming through. Our lot a a soft bunch - if there's no grass they will stand at the gate waiting to come in, even if they've only just been put out. My big mare is one of the worst, so I've been going up at lunchtimes from work to bring both of mine in. Today I went up about 2pm and they were all standing with heads down eating, and when I brought mine in, none of the others followed me to the gate like they usually do. I've even put them into lightweight rugs tonight (even the TB, shock horror!!). Spring is finally on it's way!

Needs to be a constant temperature or it will stop growing again. By the way I thought it was 8 degrees....

Good news when it comes for the youngster but for the Cushings it means back on the old electric fence routine!

I tend to find mine eat hay according to the temperature, most of the winter they weren't finishing theirs but the last couple of weeks I've been putting out a lot more.
