Nope. Snaffles all the way I'm afraid! I use a hanging cheek snaffle on my rather strong cob for dressage, which I feel gives me slightly more brakes than a loosering would...
HOWEVER - some grass roots riding clubs do hold tests that allow for any bit to be used, or an "x point penalty" for a non legal bit, to encourage more people into the sport who may be - for whatever reason - put off by the BD legal bits.
HOwever, playing devils advocate, if your horse isn't not able to toddle around an intro or a prelim in a snaffle - then I suggest you need to get more schooling and work done rather than relying on overbitting - some of prelims really are rather easy, I think P7 only involves cantering around the edge of the arena.
Cappy is in a hanging cheek snaffle, which is fine for dressage of course.
Fany does not like jointed bits and has a large tongue, she had a snaffle and hated it. She is being schooled and is going well in her pelham.
Moggie - thank you for your reply, she is able to "toddle around in a snaffle" she just doesn't like them. It has taken us a while to find a bit she likes. We looked when she was being trained, found a Pelham she is happy in. She was coming a long nicely and we changed her bit, she hated other bits and was uncomfortable. Hence my question.
you can use a double bridle for elementary and above - but never a pelham - you use a weymouth and a snaffle.
Mine too goes lovely in a pelham with a port, and i have literally spent months finding the right snaffle for her
she is going well in a neue schule tranz angled bit - but tbh you need to try different ones - if she goes well in a mullen mouth is it the mouthpiece she likes or the curb that makes her go well,
Try a mullen snaffle-perhaps a hanging cheek.
Or if mullen not giving enough tongue relief try a double jointed snaffle or a nathe bit???
Cheers, will look again at the mullen mouth hanging cheek snaffle. Or maybe a french link hanging cheek snaffle. Not sure what a Nathe is, could you explain?
Nathe is a kind of bendy plastic, bendier than happymouth so very mild.
You can get straight bar hanging cheeks, maybe this might work, as like a pelham but without the shanks or curb chain. Or my friend has a mullen mouth eggbutt that herhorse goes very well in.
