This is my Argentine mare in my her 18 inch Prestige Paris K saddle, the width and height are all perfect for her but do you think it's too long or forward cut for her as she is very short backed .. Thank you x
Very hard to tell from photos, especially where a square pad is covering the ribcage
Saddles are only too forward cut if they get pushed backwards or restrict the shoulder (or occasionally cause bridging because of the contact points), so as long as the points are behind the scapula then the cut is okay. Once you have it in the right place, find the last rib lower down in front of the soft part of her flank, track it diagonally up and forwards and follow the same line once the rib goes under the back muscle. This needs to hit the point at which the panel curves back inwards towards the middle of the saddle, not the outside edge where it runs backwards. On a foam panel like this ideally it hits the spot where the panel contact with the back ends totally. If in doubt, mark that spot with chalk or by clearly ruffling the hair and I can give you my best estimate from a photo.
Overall it is highly likely it is too long, but not being able to see her ribcage at all I really am guessing.
Again having to guess as it's not a great photo but I'd say it looks too long. Also an odd fit in general, to me she doesn't look like the shape of horse cc saddles are designed for.
Thanks people, she's ex polo but she fitted my 17 inch 34 width prestige eventing saddle perfectly but I was happier in an 18 so went into one of those, it just looks bigger on her than the 17 by quite a lot. I will have the prestige saddler check her over in it to make sure x
I have no idea how any of you are saying that it is definitely fine. How on earth do any of you know where the last rib is?! It varies a lot between horses, you cannot say it is X% forwards of the hip or anything like that. They even slope at different angles in some horses!
