Someone told me its a good way to see a youngsters target height when full grown, is it right to measure from elbow to coronet and what ever that length is to then measure it from elbow 2 wither? My boy is a 2.5 yr warmblood x cob type and is14.1 at the moment but had long legs and very bum high, I did this test several times on him and he came out at 16h. Could he really grow that much? I know his mum was a 16 h warmblood and father was the cob type. Just really interested 2 know what he will make.

There are two different string tests, one is measure from mid knee to coronet band and whatever length the string is in inches turn into hands 14 ins=14hh etc, or the second method is measure elbow to ergot the reverse the string up from the elbow and this will be the final wither height. If you are going from elbow to coronet you will get an incorrect measurement.

As Spiritedly said, there are two methods, i tried the ergot to wither measurement at the weekend on my youngster she's 2.5 at the mo and around 14hh, the test showed she had quite a lot of growing to do at least another hand, potentially 15hh - 15.2hh :) I also tried it on my 26 year old pony to see if it was anywhere near, and his measurement was spot on.

So in answer to your question then yes your youngster could make 16hh.

Does anyone know what age you can use the second method up to? my boy is showing 14" on the coronet to knee but is nearly 14.2hh at coming 4 can I still use the ergot to elbow inversion method accurately?

Sorry that should have said ergot to elbow on my yongsters measurement, not ergot to wither, that would have made an interesting measurement :o

Ergot to elbow doubled and it's usually correct to the nearest inch however bizarre it might seem. One out of a 15.1 TB went to 18 hands, shock horror as a 2 year old. Six years later he was 17.3!!
