A teen on my yard has a big cob with moderate cpl. She follows the protocol with regards to diet, movement, clipping and moisturising. However her horse gets lesions on his legs that don't heal and often deep thrush and abscesses.

She has the vet out for one thing or another pretty much monthly, they just keep giving her flamazine and occasional antibiotics.

I personally think there's a bit too much faith being put in the flamazine, it can be magic but it's just doing nothing here. I was telling her about the various active ingredients that she could try (she is keen, I'm not sticking my oar in!) and trying to send her a list of brands.

When I was in either Australia or the US the ranch I worked at swore by a powder which was mainly clay but the active ingredient was copper, it was really good at drying up and treating oozy skin.

I can't find anything like that over here. Anyone know of a brand?

Thanks.

I was given flamazine for mud fever didn't work the only thing that clears up Arabi's scabby heals is Daktarin athletes foot spray, I'm not totally convinced that what he gets is true mud fever, I think its a fungal problem because it smells a bit like thrush and he is prone to rain scald so I think it's all related.

He doesn't really get thrush that bad though but if he has scabby legs the feet can get a touch of it.

So what I'm trying to say is sometimes things are misdiagnosed and the treatment can be a bit of trial and error, I use the antibacterial powder on his legs if it's particularly wet out that might be worth a try, Lincoln and keratex do one thet are not expensive the also put a waterproof barrier on the area but without the claggyness of a barrier cream.

I know cpl is a bit different and not related to mud fever as such but because of the thrush the fungal aspect of it could be causing more problems especially if it's affecting the skin as well.
