Is there a limit on how much Bute?

Is there a limit/what is the limit of bute you can feed in a 24 hour period? It is probably on the packet but I'm at home and don't have one to hand.

Yes there would be a limit, what it is I don't know and would in part be based on horse size. Speak to your vet directly.

My vet said 4 a day for large horse but not for long term. If you need to give 4 though you would be getting vet advice anyway so sure you not intending to go over this Hope your horse gets better soon x

Very much so. Bute needs to be used sparingly, not as a general purpose pain killer.

Max I've even been told to give was 2, twice a day and that was for pretty massive pain but I wouldn't have them on that for more than a couple of days and then drop it down.
You shouldn't really use it for more than 4 or 5 days without vet advice.

Bute is not a drug without side effects and some of them can be severe. There should always be a valid medical reason for its use. The fact its so freely given to horses can mask the fact it is a potentially harmful drug in the wrong case or at the wrong dose.

Ring your vet to find out a suitable dose for your horse rather than taking the risk of overdosing to be safe.

Also on a side note if your horse has ever received Bute,this should be recorded go on its passport to prevent any possibility of it entering the human food chain.

4 is what is listed on the packet for dosage instructions. I give my old lad bute on a regular basis, I'm now a bit of a bute geek sadly. I'd rather not be though

Re damage, I asked my vets about the side affects and the answer was in the older horse something else will get them before the bute has a chance to do anything sinister. They have never come across a horse who suffers because of bute intake.
