Is there any truth in the rumour there is, or is likely to be a national hay shortage ?

YO put out note saying she can't at present get any hay from supplier due to 'national hay shortage' and she doesn't know when she will be able to get a delivery and we have to find our own.

We have all managed to get some without much problem. Is she just being a fruit loop for the sake of it?

No of course there isnt. Comments like that really get my back up.

As soon as we get some decent weather this years hay will be being cut and there will be plenty as usual. All people need to do now is look around for the last of last years. Our YO's supplier is now out but will soon cut more, I have managed to find lots of last years locally and not at silly money either.

There was a significantly reduced hay crop last year because of the weather conditons in some areas (down by about a third) so it may well be correct thatt here is less hanging about in some areas now, and it is too early for a cut this year

It's not really the right time of year to be looking for hay. Last year there was a shortage of hay (at least down here in the South)because there was only one cut. After the first cut we had the massive drought and the grass simply did not grow again until September. So hay became very short quite quickly as there was only half the amount to go round. It's too early in the year to be looking for this year's hay yet. Round here anyway, a few people have only just done the first cut and most people don't seem to have cut at all yet. As I write it is p*ssing down with rain and the forecast for the rest of the week is pretty dire too so there certainly won't be any cut this week. If we get the same sort of weather as last year, there might well be only one cut again

Well where I am the YO has already taked one cut (managed to get it in before it started hammering it down) and the way it's been raining I would imagine there'll be plenty for a second cut. I'm sure I hear there is a National Hay Shortage every single year....

Two suppliers have run out so far this year, and the yard I work on are now using this years hay, still green

Perhaps not a national shortage, but where I am there is definately a local shortage of last years crop

xx

I have loads of hay I need to get rid of cheap, but in round bales, in North Cambs if anyone wants to talk to me about it! It's off an unsprayed virtually weed free three year old ley.

I heard there is going to be a shortage - but not seen any evidence of it so far. Is it ok to feed this years green stuff?!

I have a small problemo feeding green stuff myself as my chappie is 26 and it tends to give him colicky symtoms (think he just gulps it too quick as it tastes yummy and he gets a spot of wind but you can't be too safe with the oldies!!)

There's plenty of hay!!!!

Tons and tons of it! The hay merchant in Newmarket loves it when someone spreads those rumours-he gets millions of bales in weekly and then transports them out!
