than an eggbutt snaffle with a french link? My dentist says he has a low palate and fleshy tongue and big lips so she said something with tongue relief would be good. He's currently in an Eggbutt snaffle and I don't have any real issues with it but wondered if there was nicer one for him. I was looking at the Bomber bits, and the HP Tongue relief (a dupe for a Myler) but wondered if there was anything else out there? Has to be something fixed though as he doesn't get on with loose rings! Thanks!

we ran a bitting clinic recently and it was really interesting to see himbreakdown why the typical snaffles are often very hard on horses. And how some french links are harder bits than dr bristols when they examined how they worked in the mouth.

I took one as a dwemo horse who has a big tongue and the guy recommended a Bombers Happy Tongue Eggbutt and she loves it!

I had heard a similar thing about french links was recommended to always look for a lozenge instead however not sure I see the need for the link at all so thought the Bombers might be a good shout..thanks!

Who did you use for your clinic? It'd be interesting to get one going at my yard!

My go-to bit for anything that's not happy in the mouth is a curved mouth jointed snaffle with eggbutt rings. The curved mouthpiece gives some tongue relief, and reduces the nutcracker action of a standard jointed snaffle, and I'm yet to find a horse that doesn't like it. Currently using it on a mare with a big fleshy mouth, and a massive tongue with a huge split in it (probably from a tongue tie - it's horrid).

My mare, with her low palate and fleshy tongue (and wave mouth) who HATED a French-link loose ring snaffle, absolutely love her Myler Low Port Comfort Eggbutt Snaffle (the MB04 I think... egg04 is the code on Horse Bit Bank. Though I ended up buying from the horse bit shop instead because their hire scheme is easier)
The bitting advice I was given was to try either that or the Bombers Happy Tongue

I have both eggbut and loose ring bomber happy mouth bits, each of the 2 bigger ones use(d) them, both v happy in their big fleshy mouths. The eggbut went onto the newbie, who had been slammed into a Waterford loose ring in the fortnight before I got her. She was SO much more settled and happy in her mouth immediately.
Def worth doing bit hire to try OP.

Bean has been notoriously hard to bit, and we've tried everything mentioned above.

I ended up getting a bit fit consultant out, and she recommended a curved single jointed snaffle. I would never have put her in this as assume she would have hated it, however we've now had it in since the start of the year and still going well.

Apparently for those types with a low palate and large tongue, it's much nicer than a standard french link / lozenge

My horse has low palate, large tongue. Equine dentist says no lozenges / links for him.

I tried a JP curved single jointed snaffle, it is okay. But the Myler ported, forward tilted comfort snaffle seems better still. I worry about the nutcracker action of single jointed snaffle. The myler comfort snaffle is pretty clever, protection and independent rotation, and tongue space.

Thanks all - think i'll be hiring the Bomber from the Bit shop! I think he's fairly unphased by bits (except the loose ring) so just want to make sure he is as comfy as possible!

Interestingly I tried the myler and while she was better than most in it, I think it was just a touch too harsh for her

My lad sounds very similar to yours. He’s in a myler low port comfort snaffle (it’s a loose ring, but you can get eggbuts). He was in a French link eggbut before & despised it. My instructor has also ridden him in a full cheek with lozenge which she said he went beautifully in too!
