Hi all

I am a Brit who lives in the US. My 4 yr old WB has been diagnosed with shivers and PSSM 2.

I have been talking to Dr Valberg in the US who as far as I know is the only vet here researching these issues. Is there anyone you know of in the UK or on the continent who has been researching shivers?

I want to see if there is a theory or treatment floating around I haven't tried yet... so far diet, exercise, bodywork and various supplements have made no difference. It's very sad... I don't know when to give up :(

thanks.

Have you used acetyl l carnetine and high vitamin E doses for the PSSM? I don't know about shivers but I have two with PSSM type 2 and they respond well to that.

Yes: have done ALCAR, l-carnitine, cinnamon, cod liver oil to no effect. I'm starting a month-long trial of curcurmin (turmeric extract) now.

Horse is on low sugar hay, and no grain/high fat diet (2c/day canola) with 7500IU natural vit E (was 10,000 IU but dropped down with no change), lots of amino acids and diet carefully balanced in ******.com with hay analysed and 24/7 turnout.

He does not appear symptomatic for PSSM - it's the shivers that is the immediate problem...

Have you tried contacting the universities that have vet schools and asking them. I spoke to Leahurst which is part of Liverpool Uni years ago when I my horse had an issue my own vets were stumped by (lived in Northern Ireland at the time). They were really interested in the issue and very helpful. I know other forum users have done the same when they've needed a further opinion and advice.

my horse has a shiver he is on a low sugar and low sugar grass but his shiver is not that bad and is ride-able (until he did a tendon!) and it only flairs up when we have finished and sometimes you notice it in his field..how bad is your horses shiver??? The other place to contact is maybe rossdales in newmarket they do loads of research

I lost my boy in January as his shivers had degenorated to a point where it was unfair to keep him going :(

I have done so much research on shivers over the 8 years, tried every diet/supplement/exercise etc possible. I have not come across any veterinary experts in the UK on this unfortunately. Feel free to pm and i'll happily let you know what i tried.
