Went up on to the mountain to the old church through the forest for the first time, it's a long slog uphill in the sultry weather so quite hot when we reached the top. D was great though she a fab 4wd pony on the rocky bits and was much more chilled than usual when we go through the forest despite the flies out in force. Day off tomorrow then school on Saturday. She's had quite a busy week.IMG-20240718-WA0011.jpg

What a wonderful landscape!

I'm hacking tomorrow. Feeling pleased with myself for swapping the lesson to last week so that I could hack this week instead; it's forecast 22c when we set out at 10am and I think much nicer to have been in the school last week when it was cooler and out hacking in the heat this week instead.

She's very cute! Gorgeous view too.

I am off on Dex's first ridden outing on Sunday, his second outing ever - it's a fun ride that is pretty local, maybe 20 mins and I am meeting a friend there with her bomb proof GP horse. They have a 6km and a 10km route, so we're going to see which is nicer underfoot. I have popped him in a pelham as the more fast work we are doing out hacking the stronger he is getting, and I'd rather have too much and not need it than find I don't have enough.

Wish me luck! It could very much go one of two ways 🤣

Hacking for us too - the vet saw Chilli on Wednesday and confirmed he's definitely not comfortable under saddle when schooling based on his behaviour, although he looked better after flexions and on the lunge than he did before his injections in April. He thinks the joint wants to fuse and has recommended hacking and looking again in March - it's unlikely he'll ever be able to do dressage though :(

Still, he's very happy hacking so we're off to a local fun ride tomorrow morning :)

Sorry to read this Jiffy although that sounds positive that there has been some degree of improvement and that he can enjoy his hacking with you.

I had another hacking success today, and just the perfect weather for it!

I was more relaxed as it was my first hack for a good while where the horse was not completely new to me. He was a bit steadier today because of the heat although we did have a fire breathing dragon moment (thank you donkey in field). My instructor was on foot and took hold of horse for me to be able to focus on sitting up and staying relaxed, which I thought I did very well especially with my brain busy going 'shit shit shit' and presenting me with a visual image of bogging off down the lane at speed. Moments later horse was back to pootling along. I really don't like the fire breathing dragon feeling but did chuckle at it and actually am kind of glad that happened as it was a good experience in learning to just deal with it. Next time that happens I hope I will be able to practice my half-halts and being able to keep hold for myself without a person on the ground. All in all a very good ride. :)

That is super cool! If you'd be happy to share where it is, I'd definitely be interested to know

Monsal Trail near Bakewell, I walk it now and then.

There's a big car park at a lovely cafe right on the trail but you need to go when it's not busy to find space for a lorry. And share the trail with bikers and walkers, sometimes a lot of them. It's a gorgeous walk/ride though.

@Backtoblack have you talked to anyone about depression. Anhedonia or loss of enjoyment in things is a symptom.

My very miniscule achievement today... Cantered for the first time by ourselves. Only taken me 18 months 😂 very proud of us. YO was technically about to scrape me up if needed but no acrobatics and even on the right leg 😅.
Nice way to round off the week.

Took the Spanish Bean out for a jumping clinic again. We haven't jumped for a while and the rustiness definitely showed! Some tough exercises today but good learning.

Although I feel like such a noob at jumping again as it has been so long, you wouldn't know that I used to jump newcomers 🙄🤣

Anyway enjoy the thrills and spills video

How nice to have gone showing again!

I showed a lovely bay shire gelding in the open in-hand gelding class, I’ve driven him before but this was our first time showing. He went ok but he’s not a horse who likes the wet and it was raining so hard I couldn’t see across the snowfield. Pleased with a third in the circumstances and our class winner eventually stood supreme.

‘My’ boy went on to win the driving class with his owner and also placed in the young handler, so a good day.

Ring stewarding was wet, wet, wet and lots didn’t come forward but I can’t blame them!

What better way to celebrate a successful outing than sharing a Pimms?!

Fabulous fun ride, Dex was absolutely brilliant as always. We did 10km and he was out with the big boys as friend brought her ex grand-prix showjumper, and the ex grand prix dressage horse for her client to ride! He was VERY keen in the canters, and got a little upset when people passed and then went off round the corner which is fair enough but all in all just brilliant for a 4yo and his second time leaving the yard, I am really proud of him. He just continues to excel himself in every way.

This also marks my one goal for the whole year complete which was to do one fun ride, which consideing when I set it on 10th Jan Dex wasn't backed even, and I didn't have any transport, I am absolutely thrilled with. Happy ASBMO!

We're off to the Royal Welsh Show tomorrow. Its been a roller coaster of a journey leading up to the main event. We weren't even sure if we were going until this week. Benjamin Brown is currently sporting a brilliant purple lycra suit which he isn't best impressed about. Hopefully he won't try removing it over night.

Lovely to see everyone enjoying their ponies and horses this weekend.

Best of luck!! Make sure you drop back in and let us know how you get on - I would love to go to the Royal Welsh as a spectator, it sounds fab!

Lottie has been busy! Schooling is now more focused on SJ so we practiced flying changes which she seems to find very easy, and rein back to canter, to remind her she has hocks! The feeling of power from behind when she strikes off from rein back is a very different feeling, and her canter in jumping lessons feels much springier.

Then today we headed for a Cat 1 show as we are back on the hunt for DCs to qualify for National Amateur Champs. And she did jump clear in the qualifying class - woop woop. Only 1 clear left to get.

We then entered a Scope qualifer and - numpty rider that I am - I headed for number 1 then panicked that I had not heard the bell, so circled away. Crossed tracks, triggered the timing clock! Arggg. Once we actually started we jumped a fab fast round and would have been well-placed! Ah well. I am utterly ecstatic anyway. What a horse. She just does everything with a can-do attitude and a spring in her step. The ultimate allrounder. Feel very lucky and I know it won't last forever, so I am soaking up every moment we have.

Dreamy hacking 😍

Rooni contested the inter 1 bronze area festival last week. It was hot and I made a total pigs ear of my 3’s but test was really sweet otherwise. One judge marked lower than the others but such is dressage. He was a really good boy all round and super confident in the warm up and ring.

IMG_1574.jpeg

We won on 65% (only out of 2 but with a very good margin) so are off to the champs for our fourth consecutive year.

He’s had a hack and a few days off and we are not out for a little while now.

Chilli was fab at the fun ride and the ex-racer we went with was a perfect nanny. The ground was perfect for some long trots and canters, the jumps were inviting but as Chilli's not been over any natural fences (and eyed them all up with suspicion!) I didn't go over any. He was also very suspicious of the photographers so there are some quite amusing photos of him looking like a hackney...sadly I won't be buying any 😆
