HORSES? :)

I know its many peoples dreams but id love to gave my own livery or break & produce horses?

But i always get told theres no.money in horses! So is this true? Can.u make a living from buying & selling horses? Does anything in the horse world pay well?

:)

Nope, no money in horses unless you make the big time. Which is rare. I have learnt this the hard way and now I'm off to pursue a career elsewhere and keep my horses a hobby. That way for me I can still enjoy my boys

You can make a living sure, but it depends what 'making a living' means to you. If you do things properly, don't cut corners and rent your land then you probably wont make much unless you get lucky/have great contacts/are an exceptional horseman. You can easily get a decent job whereby you earn enough to pay rent/bills and the odd night out, but that's about it! I don't make any money, but I do this for the lifestyle, not the money.

Well everyone I know who works in the equine industry as you describe are always skint, and that includes some pro riders I know, a couple of them are 4* event riders as well with owners etc. From my own viewpoint, it seems that most people do it for the lifestyle.

Every-one I know, who works with horses, lives 'hand-to-mouth', except perhaps, the mounted police officer who decided to leave the mounted branch, because he didn't have time to enjoy his own horses.

None, the only people I know making 'serious money' were old money and had that as a back up for their first few very unprofitable years as a start-up stud.
I'm making enough money to live - just - as a dressage rider, but that's with heavy sponsorship backing, great owners and very supportive parents/family/friends.

unless you are either very very special or very very rich it is virtually impossible to make money in breeding/producing/livery ect. from what i can remember Sarah, you are quite young so if i were you and had the ability then i would be looking at working at a competition yard or something and getting loads of experience and variety under my belt long before venturing into any sort of business. remember, even monty roberts was kicking on a bit before he made his millions in the horse game.

What about training to be an equine dentist or physio or something? The dentists around here must have plenty work as I can't get one to come out! I have to get the vet. I wouldn't care to try and buy and sell at the moment, trying to sell anything is a total nightmare, I was offered £100 for pony unseen and no one else came to look at it.

I wish there was a way to make money :( but then everyone would do it!

This is the key, if there was an easy way to make pots of money, we'd all be earning millions! :)

There is money to be made from horses, but very very few people are making tons of money. You could be incredibly lucky and produce a great horse that would sell for a 6 or 7 figure sum of money, but for every 1000 horses there's only 1 that might be that good.

Generally speaking working with horses is hard work, with long hours, out in all weathers. Say you run a livery yard, charge X amount per week kerching!, but it's not as simple as that, you have to look after the business, it won't run itself, even if you go full DIY and don't offer extras. You still have to maintain the buildings and the land - unless you employ people to do all the work for you, but then you won't make a profit that way.

I can remember several years ago now standing with OH looking at rows of beautifully cleaned bridles hanging in the tackroom, and thinking that each one equated to in income of £100 per week, and being utterly depressed that despite owning our yard outright, making our own hay, living in a caravan and never going on holiday or going out, working 15 hour days 365 days of the year, our overheads were such that we were permanently skint :(

And we had a helluva good reputation for what we did, and some great owners.

The only person I know working with horses who is seriously rolling in it is my physio, who is quite brilliant and works the length and breadth of Ireland mostly doing racehorses. She did however invest wisely in her training in the US and is not a charlatan like some "back people" ;)

Basically, no.

The people who get rich are either unbelievably talented, unbelievably lucky, or money grabbing immoral ******* who screw everyone over.

But people do earn enough to live. Xx
