There is some 'ads by google' which keep coming up at the top of my screen covering the post button etc... is there anyway I can get them to go away?

Use Firefox as your browser and their very useful adblocker function

Yes, if you are using Internet Explorer, there is a compatability button. It looks like a sheet of paper with a zig-zag line through it. That makes the page fit properly, and hey presto the ads don't cover stuff any more.
