...seal opened haylage? You may remember my post about the "warm" haylage. Well, basically we have half a bale left, been open 7 days I think, and flys have started swarming round it! Obv. stopped using it immeadiatly. Is this just a sign we are not using it up quick enough? It is cheaper to buy the bigger bales but only have one horse so may have to go back to the smaller ones.

We have another one of these large bags and I was wondering is there a way maybe we can seperate and seal one half so it doesn't go skanky for a while? Will wrapping it up in bags be enough? If there is no way then will go back to small bags and in depths of winter change to large bags again when we will be using more.

I would have thought sealing it back up would cause the haylage to get very warm, so would go mouldy quicker.

When we used it, we rolled it out in the field for them to pick at when they like.
 
Not really anyway of re sealing that i know of, and i would think once it has been opened it will go even more manky if you re sealed it. we tend to just open it and take all the plastic off it as soon as possible, then it keeps a bit better.
 
YES!

Buy the vacuum storage bags that you can use a hoover to suck the air out of. Cheapest big ones are on eBay, about a metre square, will take a good big whack of haylage in each one.

Put the haylage in, suck the air out. Hey presto, keeps until you open it again. Can be opened and resealed as often as you like!
 
The other answer is to TOTALLY unwrap the bale and stack it loosely on a couple of pallets, under cover, in an airy place. Only stack a couple of slices on top of each other - and after a couple of days you'll need to turn the unused sections. It dries out a bit and ends up more like hay - but doesn't go mouldy (unless you stack it too high.)

Or you could use a combination of methods - a third to use first, a third stacked loose under cover (to use second) and a third re-sealed in vacuum bags (to use last.)
