Hi guys,

As title really - I'm (hopefully) doing quite a big show class at the end of August and my mare just loves to poo all down her hocks the night before (does it every single time we have a show!)...so I was pondering different ways to try and keep them clean...

Would there be anything wrong in putting hock boots on her overnight in the stable??

Dripping poo down her hocks? Are you sure she is being fed properly and feeling ok ? Droppings should be nice and firm and stay in shape when they hit the floor.. not running down her legs.

Oh blimey!! i worded that one wrong!! No she is fine thank you!....I don't mean literally dripping like water....she just manages to get it on her hocks everytime!!
After 30 years of horse owning, yes she is being fed properly and is fine thanks!

haha, how do they always manage it? Especially the night before a show.

Have you seen Hock Socks? I think they're made by Cashel. Sorry, skiving at work so best not push my luck too much and find you the link, but it should come up on Google. They're basically hock boots, but padded like a stable rug. Very comfy. She'd prob get too hot in them, but shouldn't sweat up in them, which she would in normal hock boots. I use them on my old girl in the winter, as she gets cold and stiff easily. They stay on well, wash easily for next time, and don't rub.

if its a last resort then no prob at all-my old mare used to somehow skin her hocks, even on a full shavings bed ON MATS!!!! so in the end had to wear the old fashioned leather and wool hock boots every night.what i did was cut off the bottom strap, as that would dig in to her leg when she lay down, and then wrapped the top strap with some gamgee and then vetwrap, so although i could do it up snugly enough not to slip, there was some *give* in it when she lay down.make sure you get the ones with an elastic insert or an elasticated strap too.

bit expensive just for one night though-could you wrap her in clingfilm?!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I bandage her lower legs the night before a show but think movement would be restricted alot bandaging her hocks.

Thanks Rana - I'll have a look for the hock socks...

Princess - I actually did put cling film round her hocks covered with vet wrap when she had really bad mud fever a couple of years ago so maybe for 1 night I could do that again???!

I'm thinking of resorting to this myself! Even after a night in a hood, rug and bandages he will still have a green neck, side and bum and just like royal will manage to get stuff down his hocks (funny how he manages to aviod this most other nights) The joy of a coloured who uses his poo as a pillow.

Royal - is yours a coloured?

Yes she is!! :D

Last show we did, we got moved down a place to 3rd, when I asked why Judge said "you can't keep her legs clean can you" !!!!!!!!!

So seeing as the next show is a county one, I'd best try and make an extra special effort!!

We have one like this too! Dirty thing! We haven't found anything that works, and I wouldn't want to leave boots on, so we just wash them in the morning.. We wash the day before, and put a mane and tail conditioner on his hocks, which seems to stop him getting as dirty as usual, and then do a quick wash in the morning.

I don't show and never have done nor do i have a grey horse! But what about putting sudocrem (or however you spell it) on the hocks, so the poo never actually gets to the skin! Just wash/wipe it off in the morning! Either that or do the obvious thing... Stay up all night with your horse and skip out as soon as a poo arrives... LOLOLOL x

Thats what I usually do, but I'm going to have to start plaiting at 5:30 in the morning so want to save as much time as possible!!! Plus she's going to have her bandages on (with whitening paste underneath) which I don't want to take off until the last possible minute so don't really want them to get wet.

Heidi - sudocrem isn't a bad idea!! Nothing sticks to that stuff!!

Thanks guys!

I wouldnt use sudocreme... It tends to bring any grease to the surface making it all go a bit grey and its a bugger to get off again... I make a point of not using any on scabby bits on my boys white socks if we are going anywhere.
