Is this a good idea or not?

Me and my 6yo had our first jumping lesson last week and although it was only little fences he was starting to do quite well considering he has never jumps before!
My local RC has a combined training competition in 3 weeks split over 2 days so dressage on the sat and jumping on the sun and it's only like 20 mins up the road from me. I was wondering wether to go and have a little try - we would just do the Intro A test which we have done before and did quite well and a little SJ class, either 2ft or 2ft3 - do you guys think this is a step too far or a good learning experience? There would be no pressure on him and he would be able to pop the fences out of trot if needed! Is it worth a go or should I wait til we have had much more jumping experience (between now and the competition we will have done some more jumping!)

Why not? :) As you said, no pressure - you can trot your way round if you like. Sounds like a relaxed way to get him used to being out and about - no long journey to and from the competition ground. Go for it. No reason why you shouldn't. :D

I prefer to do some clear round jumping for my youngsters first jumping away from home outing. There is less pressure and a lot of places will let you do two rounds back to back which can be hugely beneficial for an inexperienced horse.

Certainly the height you mentioned shouldn't be a problem so it depends how confident you and your horse are.

I would aim to go, it sounds like a good starting point, I once had a pony in for schooling he jumped his first x pole on the Monday, did a little pole work and jumping most days ending the week by doing 2x clear rounds at a small show, it gave him great confidence and did no harm at all.
Sometimes having an aim like this really helps you focus and the horse can really benefit from a little more intensive work, if you get there and he is not confident you can always pop one or two and finish on that.
