Is this an abscess?

Horse came in lame yesterday and on further inspection there is clear liquid coming from what looks like a red squashy area on her heel bulb. I've only ever dealt with abscesses that have drained from the sole and black stuff has come out so this is a new one to me. Does this sound like an abscess or something else? If it is an abscess how can I encourage it to drain, I'm assuming there's no point poulticing the hoof now if it's already draining at the top? Can i poultice the heel or no?

It's either an abscess or an overreach wound. Poultice it in either case. If it's a burst abscess movement will encourage it to drain.

Vet wrap the poultice on around the heel and then a nappy over the top with duct tape worked for the abscess I had to drain from that area some time ago. It was very, very sore though and the protest kick just missed me while I was bent over - so watch yourself!
