Ok, long story but my 19 year old has had intermittent lameness for a year and eventually had annular ligament surgery on both his hind legs last septemberSurgery was successful. He had 4 months off and has been gradually brought back in to work since January.
He became unsound on left hind shortly after starting trot work but became sound quite soon after going back to walk for a month before re starting trot work again. He also had Cartrophen injections, one a week for 5 weeks and currently now one a month as vet thought lameness in left hind may have been unrelated to his surgery and possibly something else due to his age and time off work.
Now we have been progressing with canter work but taking it steady but we have a new problem. He is now on his summer routine in during the day and out at night. When I bring him out of the stable to ride etc he has started to walk out lame on his right hind. This gets better once he has walked about a bit and does not appear lame once ridden. It seems to happen when he has been just standing in his stable ( never had this before even when in all night over the winter) When I put him out later in the day he is usually fine probably because he has been fidgeting in anticipation of being turned out again. I have had him checked by his Bowen practitioner who said he seemed sore on his right quarters and thought the problem was muscular. I've taken him back to just walk and trot work and he has not done any canter work for a week but still same. He seems happy and sound to be ridden but I am worried about this weird lameness issue. His stifle seems OK and there is nothing else obviously wrong with flexion. He other wise looks fab. Could this be arthritis ( can it get that bad that quickly) or do we think its muscular or something else? He has also been on Maxivita Green Lipped Muscle for about 3 weeks which I started as precaution before any of this happened. Vet is seeing him next week but wondered is anyone had anything similar with an older horse? He was a bit like this last summer before surgery but he was clearly ridden lame. Wondering if lying down in the field at night rather than in stable would make him sore since all came on since change of routine and also starting the canter work?
