Hello

My mates dog has a srap with the neighbours dog at the weekend and as a gesture of good will - she footed the vets bill for the other dog - anyway the other dog has a small bite wound to its back leg - nothing major - has had a handful of stitches and the bill came to 250 quid??? I was mortified!! Also the wound has had to have antibiotics and thats totalled to anoter 150 quid??? I cant believe it - the cut isnt anything nasty - only about an inch long? The dog didnt need sedating or owt to be handled either?

Is there any governing body my friend can go to ? or does this seem right ? thanks for your help,

Well if the dog has had stitches I would be very surprised if they didnt give it a general anaesthetic to do it, dogs dont generally sit still to be stitched even with a local. That will be immediately bump up your cost!

If the antibiotics really cost £150 then that is ridiculous, way over the odds, but unless you see a breakdown of the bill then it is impossible to know how the vets got to that figure?

As a guideline my greyhound was bitten by my ex-BFs labrador - it cost me £250 in total for an out of hours consultation, antibiotic injection and clean up of the wound, and for her to go in the next day and have a general so the wound was cleaned and stitched up properly.

He only paid half the bill though

If the dog was seen during emergency hours...then the call out fee alone will be over £100...it looks about right to me, except for the anti biotics at £150

thats not possible

They stitched the dog up without sedating it? Why and how the hell did they keep it still? Out of hours vets are hugely expensive so this could account for the £250 although even then it seems steep. I think they charge about £60 call out plus consultaion of £15-£25, plus stitches etc maybe £100? The £150 for the antibiotics must be a mistake though. They usually cost about £15 -£25 for 10 days supply. I'd get your friend to ask for an itemised bill!

as a vague guide, i saw a dog fri night bleeding from it's mouth - had some kind of injury under it's tongue. kept it in fri night and operated sat lunchtime. GA and suture wound under tongue plus antibiotic and painkiller injections and a week of each to go home on. £550. (out of hours consult and overnight stay was £150 of that)

Good God, how lucky I am to have our vets

My spaniel tore himself out shooting, five stitches under local, anti B injection and five days tablets = £46. No charge to have stitches removed

Makes my vets seem pretty good too. When Buffy was having problems with a wound on her tail the vet was checking it and changing dressing every 48 hours. That included a sunday when he met me at the surgery, I was only charged for the dressing.

Think the bill your friend has to pay is okay apart from the cost of the antibiotics, I would definitely query that.

thanks all - the dog was seen in surgery hours and cant have been aneas as it was only in the vets for an hour and then came home

Thanks for all the replies x
