Sorry for long post. Bought mare Aug 2019,as safe all rounder, as replacement for my horse having to be retired. (Mature novice rider).Regular schooling sessions from trainer then a short period at their yard, whilst there, behaviour became horrendous, since owning, had discovered, was quite marish. Anyhow vet visit, ovaries scanned clear but xrays discovered impingement of 2 dorsal spinious processes tho not touching. Put on regumate to see if behaviour improved and sent home to me for rehab programme. At this stage, trainer seemed to wash their hands of her after initially thinking she was exciting prospect, not once contacting me to see how things were going. Rehab started feb but had to be ceased till may due to covid., restarted, things going well apart from occasional grumpiness in stable, regular visits from physio, saddle introduced, still working well then in space of two weeks, was moved from her field she shared with yard owners horses(separate sections) due to yard owner bringing home her young young horse. Moved into same sort of setup in another field with 2 mares, one of which seems to be constantly in season , also young horse stabled next to her. Then another 4 new horses arrived. She now is really aggressive in stable as well as in field with the mare who's constantly in season, she now appears to be in season herself, squirting and winking everywhere. Displaying stallion like behaviour. Vet booked for first available app in 2 weeks as says this should not be happening with being on the regumate, 10 MLS daily. Dont know what to do, have no one to help me and don't think I am experienced enough to deal with her, cant sell her , nor would want to cos God knows what would happen to her. Previous to this last upset of new horses, at times she could have been the sweetest mare. Any advice welcome. Just dont know where to go from here.

Sounds like she has had a stressful time of it lately, did vet investigation the ulcer route?. Also regulate does not work for all mares and some need marbles places or tumours removed.
See what the vet says and if your not happy get a second opinion.

I would get the vet back and if need be get a different vet if your not happy with the outcome.

Would your yo not help you out a bit with the horse if she is becoming difficult to handle, and fi d a different instructor don't waste time on people that can't be bothered.

Also have you had her checked for ulcers? She has had quite an upheaval the aggression can be a sign.

I wouldn't say it is the end of the road just yet, more of a speed bump, if you will.

Do you have a vet that specializes in repro in your area? I think a good look at her ovaries is warranted. There's are a few different things you can do to help a mare with hormone/repro system issues, so don't lose hope yet!

I would also treat for ulcers since it sounds like she's been having a stressful time. I think if you treat of ulcers and get the repro issue sorted out, you'll find that you have a much more manageable partner.

Thankyou. At initial visit, vet said highly unlikely for ulcers, a vet friend has mentioned poss of tumours even tho at initial scan of ovaries, nothing showed up. Will have to wait it out til vet appointment.

It sounds like she has had a lot of change in a small amount of time. One of my mares can become very upset by sudden change and I have to make sure to only change one thing at a time or to change gradually. She may settle down once a routine is established again. Also remember with mares they are still entire and herd mates are forced upon them, which they may not like. In the wild they would live in a matriarchal family herd. It might be worth seeing if she prefers a different companion.

My mare would also be totally stressed out in that environment, she wouldn't cope with all the chopping and changing, especially having all those new horses arrive. Is there a smaller yard you could move her to just to see if she can settle down? She sounds like she needs some stability and to feel settled with her companions. I moved one of my mares from livery on at an equestrian centre to a small diy yard and she was a different person completely. I think the big yard just blew her mind all the time and made her very insecure.

Yes, she is a very sensitive mare, was happy in group she was in at start of field turnout but then was moved because of yo needing her section of field for their own horse, I agree she doesn't deal well with change tho when I first got her she didn't give much trouble at all. In last six months she was moved turnout open, had new stable companion, then moved field in with different horses, then to cap it all group of new horses arrived into the bargain. Unfortunately there is no chance of different companion, you go where your told to go in yard. Tho there's definitely something going on with her homones atm, regumate no longer working and came into season badly last week, displaying behaviours more in tune to a stallion. Will have to see what vets says. Experienced equine practice. Just have to keep fingers crossed that we can get to bottom of her issues.

Yes, totally agree, for a long time, it had been only a couple of people, it's a private yard and mostly only myself there, butcsince these new arrivals its becomming like a livery yard which I said I would nvery go to, rather give up than be in a big yard. Very hard to find a small yard like we had been previously.

That's a shame because stress definitely impacts their hormones and until she isn't feeling stressed, its difficult to know whether the regumate will work for her. You could end up going round in circles. Maybe the changes on the yard will calm down now its the end of summer and she might settle in better over the winter. It takes months for some horses to settle down, especially marey mares.
