Right, thinking ahead a bit here, but the Jerry Monster is looking pretty sound now after a year in the field (for those that dont remember him, he retired from eventing last year with ligament damage. He now looks good, but doesnt move as well as he used to and stands a bit cow hocked, compensating for the damage behind. Think after another winter he will be fine to start some gentle hacking.

The problem is I cannot afford to have a horse in work that doesnt compete, so if he stays at home he will just remain retired to a field till the end of his days. However this seems a shame as he is only 8 and could enjoy many years of hacking with someone. So, I wondered if it was worth trying to loan him out as a hack? The downside is he is not a novice ride at all, wont do anything dangerous but is a complete thug. Can be a bit nappy but if you get the better of him he is fine. Loves hacking and is 100% in traffic, doesnt get fizzy or anything just is rather sharp...

He also cribs which is a bit of a problem.

So would he be loanable? If so what sort of person would want him?

This is him...

Thoughts? Should I bother bringing him back into work? Or just leave him in a field...

Too right he is, if I didnt have Bob I would be offering him a home now

Seriously, yes I think he definitely is, someone will love being able to hack on such a gorgeous looking horse

I will state the complete obvious and say that I would keep a close watch on his loan home, to make sure they werent doing more with him, the temptation would be large seeing those pics

Would it be 'enough' for him to just be a happy hacker? Or does he need a job?

Could he be loaned from your place?

Yes, i would loan him if he was closer!!

I think its just finding the right person, but i'm sure there is someone out there!

Oh its a shame, i could've had him for my OH to hack round the block on, but think he may have a problem as hes real novice, shame though as im so close to you too.

But defo be good as a hack!! Hes gorgeous!!!

I think he would settle just to hack. If you wanted to school he wouldnt as then he needs working everyday and exhausting as he is a pain but hacking he should be fine. Thats why I wouldnt consider bringing him back as a dressage horse as he would have to do too much work to actually get sensible enough to compete...

He could stay at mine if someone contributed to feed/shoeing etc..

Well, you've got nothing to loose by giving it a go then, I'd say. The idea of him being loaned from your yard would be that you could keep a real close eye on him.

He is such a wonderful looking animal -- it would be wonderful to see him back in work and someone being able to enjoy him.

Good luck

hes lovely - id try and keep him at yours so you can keep an eye on him and advertise for a rider with financial contributions - sure people will jump at the chance

Yes. I suppose I can say I've been in a vaguely similar situation - my mare retired from eventing aged 8 and is now my happy hacker/rc allrounder.

She was always fine to hack, as you say, but settling her into doing what she used to do, at a slower pace and a lower level, took two years but I do now have a very settled happy horse.

I've had several sharers come and go over the two years. I've always advertised her as 'sharp' 'not novice ride' 'quiet, experienced riders only' always have a fair bit of interest and found plenty of people who I deem 'good' enough to ride her - there are plenty out there who have the experience but don't have competitive ambitions.

Particularly as you think he'll settle into a hacking home, its definitely worth a shot - and if he's anything like mine he'll love being able to go out and about again.
